Bearcats cruise past Warriors for third win in four games

The W.F. West boys basketball team had no problems taking care of Rochester on Monday, as the Bearcats shut down the Warriors early and rolled to a 57-29 win.

W.F. West didn’t allow a point until the second quarter, building a 16-0 lead in the process. Rochester had more turnovers than shot attempts in the first, and it trailed 26-9 going into halftime.

The Bearcats doubled their point total in the third, scoring 26 more to enter the fourth with a 34-point lead. In the third, W.F. West dominated on the offensive boards, giving themselves multiple scoring opportunities on several possessions.

“When you only give up 26 points in a half to a team like W.F. West, you’re pretty happy with your defense,” Rochester coach Caleb Sells said. “The only black eye was that third quarter … That was kind of our bugaboo.”

Grady Westlund scored 12 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and added four assists, while Gage Brumfield scored 11 points.

Carlos Vallejo and Weston Potter both tallied 10 points, while Ross Kelley logged four points and six assists and Hayden Rooney scored four points and had six rebounds.

Brayden O’Connor led the Warriors with nine points, and Colton Weiss scored six. Emmitt Mancuso finished with five.

The Warriors hit six threes across the second and third quarters, but didn’t make a two-point field goal until the fourth.

“They’re long and athletic, and they made it hard on us,” Sells said. “Chalk it up to a learning experience … That’s why we schedule teams like W.F. West. You learn a lot about the things you need to get better at in a hurry.”

Both teams are back in action on Wednesday. Rochester (0-10, 0-1 1A Evergreen) will be at home against Franklin Pierce, while W.F. West (4-5) will head to Tumwater for its league opener.
