At Least Two Dogs Perish in Chehalis House Fire, Others Rescued

While firefighters successfully rescued and revived two dogs trapped in a burning house on First Street in Chehalis Thursday morning, at least two dogs perished in the early morning house fire.

Lewis County 911 Communications dispatched the Chehalis Fire Department to the fire at 265 First St. at approximately 6:05 a.m. on Thursday. The Riverside Fire Authority and Lewis County Fire District 6 also responded.

The fire was burning in the front room of the house and was venting through a side window, according to Chehalis Fire Captain Rob Gebhart.

Dispatch advised the responding crews that all human occupants had made it out of the house, but there may be dogs trapped inside, Gebhart said.

Sure enough, firefighters pulled a total of four adult miniature dachshunds from the residence.

Firefighters successfully resuscitated two of the dogs, which were then taken to Newaukum Valley Veterinary Services for further medical care.

Crews were unable to resuscitate the other two dogs recovered from the building.

Gebhart advised puppies may have also been inside, but crews hadn’t recovered them as of 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire Thursday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
