Artober in Tenino: Competitions This Month Will Celebrate Art

Posted

October is canceled in Tenino. It’s “Artober” now.

To celebrate local art and artists, events will be held throughout the month. There will be a scarecrow competition and tour, fine arts showcase and a coloring contest.

Winners of each competition will be announced Oct. 30. Prizes for the scarecrow and coloring contest will be a $21 wooden money scrip for first place, a $10 gift certificate for second place and a $5 gift certificate for third place.

Three awards will be given out for the fine arts showcase: The People’s Choice, The Tenino Area Chamber of Commerce’s Choice and The Tenino Stone Carver’s Choice. The three winners will each receive a gift basket and ribbon.

The scarecrow competition is free and open to businesses, groups and residents who live in the Tenino School District.

Entries can be traditional, humorous or contemporary. The deadline to enter the contest is Oct. 16. Entry forms can be found at the Tenino Timberland Library, The Iron Works Boutique and online at teninoarts.org/scarecrow.

The fine arts showcase will be open to artists ages 16 and older who reside in Thurston County or live within 25 miles of downtown Tenino. The theme is “Stone” and works should be artistically interpreted to reflect the artists’ imagination and skills.

All traditional mediums are welcome and art can be 2-D or 3-D. Pieces must have one measurement of at least 4 inches and no measurement larger than 12 inches. Artwork needs to be submitted by Oct. 17. Entries will be on display in the historic downtown area for 10 days. Entry forms and more information can be found online at teninoarts.org/showcase.

The coloring contest is free to citizens who live in the Tenino School District. There will be separate categories for ages 5 and under, 6 through 11, 12 through 17, and 18 and older. Entry forms are available at the Tenino Timberland Library or all Tenino School District schools and online at teninoarts.org/coloringcontest. The deadline to enter is Oct. 16.

Artober is sponsored by the Tenino Area Chamber of Commerce and Tenino Arts in partnership with the Tenino Creative District, Tenino Garden Club, Tenino School District and Tenino Timberland Library.
