Winners of three straight and four of the last five, the Pirates cruised past the Fishermen 27-8 on Friday night in a C2BL West tilt in Ilwaco. It sets up a showdown in Week 9 that has plenty on the line.
Adna will welcome Pe Ell/Willapa Valley on Thursday night, a game that will determine the runner-up in the west division and hosting a crossover game the following week.
“We have to have a great week of practice. It is a little bit of a rivalry,” Pirates head coach Aaron Cochran said. “PWV is really good, we’re going to have to play our best game of the year.”
Since league play started, the Pirates (5-3, 3-1 C2BL West) have allowed an average of 14 points per game, slightly down from four non-league games. Stephen O’Dell racked up 16 tackles, had one sack and a fumble recovery while Cash Smith notched 10 tackles.
Isaac Garmin sealed the victory with a fourth quarter interception. Cochran moved Luke Mohney back to his natural position of safety and credited Smith and Naillon Ramirez for “flying around.”
“(Those two) have stepped up in a big way,” Cochran added. “Missing fewer tackles, we just need to finish tackles.”
Quarterback Layden York found Mohney for a score in the first, connected to Gavan Muller in the fourth and Beau Miller finished with 175 yards and two touchdowns. Muller hauled in four catches for 95 yards and York finished with 129 yards passing.
