3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise support for W.F. West student Hunter Wilson

The proceeds from a 3-on-3 basketball tournament will go toward supporting a W.F. West High School sophomore battling a rare bone marrow disorder.

The tournament will be held at Toledo High School on March 23, with the first games starting at 8 a.m.

Proceeds and donations will go toward Hunter Wilson and her family. Hunter suffers from Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a rare and challenging bone marrow disorder that affects blood cell production.

Hunter received the diagnosis last summer and has since undergone chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Her mom, Alyssa, described the teen as “vivacious” and a “spitfire” during an interview last year.

“Everything she does is with pure intentions,” Alyssa said.

Last year, Nov. 22 was declared “Hunter Wilson Day” by the Chehalis School District. Those unable to attend the basketball tournament can still support Hunter and her family through a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign at https://gofund.me/1a6c0445. About $28,000 had been raised out of a total goal of $50,000 as of Friday morning.

The tournament

The cost to sign up for the basketball tournament is $80 per team. Teams that haven’t paid at the check-in will forfeit.

Three games are guaranteed for each team in round robin or bracket style rounds. Games will have a 20-minute running clock. The clock will stop during the last minute if the score is within 10 points of each other.

One timeout is allotted to each team. Players will ref their own games and call their own fouls.

This tournament is not intended to have teams being coached. A parent or guardian is allowed to sit with the fourth grade and below teams to help with substitutions, however.

The uniqueness of this tournament is that kids are allowed to run their own team, organizers stated.

Only three players can play for each team at a time. Games are half court.

If a player does not have a team, they will not be placed on one. However, the event organizer can let people know someone is looking for a team. Call or message Mandy Reynoldson at 360-880-3881 or mreynoldson90@gmail.com for details.

All ages and co-ed teams are welcome.

At least four teams in each division are needed to make the competition work.
