2B Winlock Downs 2A Rochester at Home

Playing host to a 2A squad, the 2B Winlock boys basketball team picked up a big non-league victory Monday night at home, defeating Rochester 71-63.

The Cardinals led for the majority of the game, until the Warriors closed the gap in the fourth quarter, getting it to within one possession at one point. But a solid run down the stretch put away any Warrior hope for a comeback, and sealed a victory for the Cards.

“Our guys executed well down the stretch and closed out the game well,” Cardinals coach Cole Doughty said.

Winlock had two big nights from Chase Scofield and Payton Sickles, with the former scoring a game-high 31 points and hauling in 17 rebounds, and the latter scoring 23 points, as well.

“He has the potential to be that kind of player,” Doughty said of Scofield. “When he gets to the rim he’s tough, and he played aggressive tonight. It seemed like every time we needed a bucket or a clutch rebound he was the guy.”

Rochester was led by Brayden O’Connor’s 16 points, and Renz Payne’s 11.

Winlock returns to league play against Napavine Tuesday, while the Warriors hope to bounce back against Aberdeen at home Wednesday.
