2A Girls Tennis: Tigers Clipped in Season Opener

Tied at three matches each, Centralia’s season opener at home Tuesday went to a 10-point tiebreaker, with Shelton edging the Tigers by two points. Centralia freshmen Sophie Wiley and Ruth Gonzalez each won their first high school tennis match.

“It was a great first match for our team,” Centralia coach Deb Keahey said. “Our team was pretty evenly matched.”

Singles

  3. C. Muenchow (S) def. Emily Wilkerson (C) 6-0, 6-1

“Olivia Wiley showed a lot of grit and stamina and won her No. 2 singles match in a hard fought three-set battle,” Keahey said.

Doubles

  1. Maddie Corwin/Liza Hopkins (C) def. M. Maran/N. Haskins (S) 6-0, 6-1
  2. M. Betts/H. Pratt (S) def. Olivia Norris/Nora Sass (C)  4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8)
  3. Ruth Gonzalez/Sophie Wiley (C) def. F. Dawling/M. Todd (S)  6-2, 6-2

“Maddie Corwin and Liza Hopkins played really smart tennis to top their opponents,” Keahey said. “Olivia Norris and Nora Sass had a good showing and split sets. It was also their first high school league match and had a good showing.”
