1A Girls Hoops Preview: Seniors Lead the Way for Beavers

Looking to piggyback off the success its girls soccer team had this season, with the Beavers making a run all the way to the state quarterfinals, the girls basketball squad has six seniors it will rely upon this winter.

Led by Central Washington-commit Ashley Schow, and five other seniors with plenty of game experience, the Beavers defense will be stout as they look to improve upon an 8-6 overall record and 6-3 league record a year ago. After starting the season strong, the Beavers lost their last few games and dropped their first district matchup.

“It’s our players’ third year in our system now,” Beavers coach Scott Ashmore said. “They are starting to understand the concepts we’re teaching, we’re hoping to build on the success Tenino is having in all sports this year.”

Alongside Schow, who was co-MVP in league last year, seniors Alivia Hunter, Megan Letts, Grace Vestal, Abby Severse and Kayla Feltus will turn in soccer cleats for sneakers on the hardwood for the Beavers. Ashmore said Rilee Jones, a junior post player, will also feature plenty for Tenino this season.

In league, the Beavers will have their hands full in a strong conference. Tenino will be very familiar with Montesano, the team that knocked the girls soccer team out of the state tournament a week ago. The Bulldogs finished 12-2 last season and are led by Paige Lisherness and McKynnlie Dalan.

Eatonville, in its first season back in 1A, has Hailey Rath and Kya Stewart, Hoquiam will feature Charli Sampson-Eastman, and Elma is led by Janessa Sample.

With talent across the board, the Beavers will need to be at their best in every matchup to be able to compete for a league title and a state berth this season. Tenino gets its season underway in a rivalry matchup with Rochester Dec. 2 at home.
