TOLEDO — Mossyrock secured a Central 2B League volleyball win here on Tuesday in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-20 and 25-16.
“They were just very aggressive offensively. They hit very well and into several different spots on the court,” said Toledo coach Candace Maier.
Toledo’s Sandra Spahr posted seven kills and two blocks. Rylie Pliler added five kills in the loss while Gracie Madill and Brynn Williams added seven digs, and six digs, respectively.
“In the second set we got a couple of blocks. We had three or four in the match but that’s the set where we got our blocks. That helped us get a couple of points and helped us gain some momentum,” noted Maier of her team’s five point loss in the second game.
Despite the loss Maier was proud of her team’s efforts against a big hitting opponent.
“They did play pretty hard. We’re just not very deep so they had to play hard and didn't get a lot of breaks which makes it hard to turn things around,” explained Maier.
Toledo (8-2, 4-2 league) will play at Wahkiakum on Thursday. Mossyrock (8-1, 6-0) will host Onalaska on Thursday.
Tigers Bounce Back to Drop Bearcats
Centralia was able to overcome a loss in the first set here on Tuesday on their way to a four-set win over W.F. West in round one of Swamp Cup volleyball. The Bearcats took the first set 25-18 before the Tigers found their groove and posted wins of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-23 to claim the rivalry match.
“The first set we had almost a completely different lineup. We had the sick bug that had gone around so we didn’t have our starting setter for the first set,” said Centralia coach Marti Smith. “In the second set, we got back to our normal rotation and all the girls really banded together and stepped up.”
Centralia’s Madison Stoeckler dished 22 assists and tallied eight digs while Jadyn Hawley was 14 of 15 serving with five kills and 11 digs. Kennedy Strophy added six kills and two blocks while Ella Orr connected on 12 of 14 serves with 13 digs to her name. Evie Rooklidge was 15 of 16 serving in the win with 11 digs, and Madelinn Corwin added 10 kills.
“There were times when things weren’t going our way and they just all pulled together. They really wanted this for each other. I think they really just came out with the right energy,” said Smith of her team.
A lack of conductivity was the biggest complaint from W.F. West coach Emily Mora after the match.
“I thought our performance changed (after the first set). Our energy dropped down and we just didn't have the effort we needed,” said Mora. “When you play a team that’s gritty and goes after every single ball you have to have a fire. I just don’t think we played our best volleyball tonight.”
W.F. West’s Ashlyn Whalen turned in nine kills, five aces, and 22 digs while Paytton Crawford dished 30 assists. Payge Crawford contributed 19 digs in the loss and Drea Brumfield posted two blocks.
“We just kept giving every single ball to Kylie (Sharp),” lamented Mora. “I mean she’s their libero. She’s back there to pass and we just kept sending every ball there.”
Sharp was 15 of 17 serving on the night with 15 digs.
Although content with the league win Smith said she expects another fierce fight the next time the teams meet up on Halloween.
“You know W.F. West is always going to bring it. They’ve got some big athletic kids there,” said Smith.
Centralia (3-5, 2-2 league) was slated to play at Aberdeen on Thursday but that match has been pushed back to Monday. W.F. West (2-7, 2-3) will host Tumwater on Thursday.
Warriors Exterminate Bobcats in Three
ROCHESTER — The Warriors sent Aberdeen home with an ‘L’ with a 3-0 victory in an Evergreen 2A League volleyball match here on their home turf Tuesday night with set scores of 26-24, 26-9 and 25-20.
Bethany Hawes had 18 assists and five aces, but Lexie Sederberg was the big hitter of the night with nine kills and eight digs. Emily Morris also had serven kills on the night.
“We played consistently which was our goal, recently it has been a roller coaster,” said Rochester coach Wendy Hawes. “We kept them to three but we have things to try to improve on; we missed a ton of serves tonight.”
Rochester (5-5, 1-4) travels to Tumwater to take on Black Hills on Thursday.
Ducks Plunder Pirates at Home
ADNA — Toutle Lake plundered the Adna Pirates with a 3-0 victory in a Central 2B League volleyball match here Tuesday night with set scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 27-25.
Maddie Kleemeyer had five aces and five kills on the night, only allowing one error. Alyssa Davis added four kills. Both Anna Jones and Ryann Wilson played heavy defense with Wilson making 15 touches keeping the ball in play.
“It’s just nice to see that every game, there’s improvement,” said Adna coach Wendie Dotson. “We played them a lot stronger than we did the first time. Our team is young, but we’re learning and building confidence.”
Adna (2-7, 1-4) hits the road to face the Cardinals on Thursday.
Wolverines Tear Up Trojans at Home
PE ELL — The Trojans came out strong but couldn’t last against Northwest Christian losing 3-1 in a Pacific 2B League volleyball match here Tuesday night with set scores of 25-17,11-25, 17-25 and 17-25.
Claire Cleveland served 16 of 17, picking up multiple aces and leading the team with five kills on the night. Ava Bush and Kennedy Kephart also did their part and got some defensive touches.
“We came out in the first game and did fantastic, then our wheels fell off and we had a hard time putting anything together after that,” said coach Karie Cleveland.
Pe Ell (2-7, 1-3) takes on Life Christian at home on Thursday.
Chinooks Defeat MWP on the Road
MORTON — The Chinooks swept MWP with a 3-0 victory in a Central 2B League volleyball match here Thursday night with set scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-14.
Katie Salguero had three stuff blocks with six kills and Shaylee Peters had five kills. Chloe Kelly also came up with 11 assists on the night.
“We’re a little bit inconsistent right now,” said coach Tammy Kelly. “there has been some really good moments but we haven’t been able to hold onto them.”
MWP (0-6, 0-9) hits the road to face the Grizzlies on Thursday.
