TUMWATER — The Bearcats earned two wins in singles and doubles matches to defeat Tumwater 4-2 in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis match here on Tuesday.

Joelle Chung needed to come from behind to win in the No. 1 singles match against Courtney Borovec, 6-7 (1-7), 6-1, 6-2. Kailey Hickey won for the Thunderbirds in the No. 2 singles match over Sadie Jerome, 7-5, 6-4.

W.F. West’s Claire Kuykendall, a freshman in her first career varsity match, won in straight sets over Leann White, 6-2, 6-2.

“Claire is a very good athlete. She really stayed in control and we talked about the fact that you need to not beat yourself,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “Move into the mid-court and look to finish the points. She did an excellent job of that. She was very solid in her volleys, a real highlight for us.”

Sydney Cameron and Jisu Han played a tough battle in the top doubles match against Sophie Koelsch and Abby Bond, winning 7-5, 6-3. Tumwater’s Josie Grimm and Ari Kee defeated W.F. West’s Stephanie Drummond and Kaylynee Dowling in the No. 2 doubles match, 6-2, 6-2. The Bearcats clinched the match with a win in the No. 3 doubles match, 7-5, 6-2.

“I was very pleased. I told the girls before we went up that Tumwater and us are the two best teams in the league,” State said. “This is the kind of match you want to play, test yourself against the best. These are the ones that are fun. If the team is easy, it’s not that much fun, you want to be challenged.”

W.F. West travels back to Tumwater on Wednesday to face Black Hills.
