Saturday's State 2B Football: Toledo’s 27-Point Second Quarter Propels Indians Into Semifinals

PASCO — Toledo scored 27 points in the second quarter and held off a second half rally from Tri-Cities Prep to earn a 34-23 win in a State 2B football quarterfinal game at Edgar Brown Stadium here on Saturday.

The Indians will face River Division rival Kalama in the state semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Tumwater District Stadium as part of a State 2B football semifinal doubleheader. Adna and Napavine face each other at 4 p.m. following the Toledo-Kalama contest.

“It feels good. It’s not something that I don’t think I’ll be able to enjoy until later,” Toledo coach Mike Christensen said. “We didn’t have a lot of time to celebrate, but the bus ride home was fun.”

The Indians totaled 206 yards on the ground, led by Ethan Buck with 78 yards on 16 carries and a score. Duke Schaplow added 57 yards on five carries and Coleby Cherrington accumulated 47 yards on seven carries.

Quarterback Bryce Marcil was 1 of 7 passing for 17 yards, but carried the ball three times for 24 yards and two scores. Fano Arceo-Hansen caught the only completed pass for 17 yards, but also had a pick-six for the Toledo defense.

“I think we played really well. We had a good defensive gameplan put in by our coordinator and the guys executed well,” Christensen said. “I’m happy with the way the guys played hard. The fourth quarter got long and they ran 84 offensive plays to our 34 offensive plays total, but a lot of that was due to drives extended by penalty. I’m proud of all their resiliency through that.”

Tri-Cities Prep was without starting quarterback Dante Maiuri. Filling in was Kendric Sheehan and Kobe Singleton, with Sheehan completing 6 of 17 passes for 53 yards and Singleton completed 9 of 21 passes for 67 yards.

“We knew. We watched film and we knew it was going to be the same guy against Wahkiakum. We watched a lot of film on them, this guy was starter last year,” Christensen said. “It wasn’t too big of a drop off but it changed the way they ran their offense. We planned for him to be in there. Based on their formation, we had defensive keys and the guys saw those keys and executed them.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Toledo got on the board on a 25-yard fumble return touchdown by Jacob Marley. Marcil converted a 1-yard run before another defensive touchdown by Arceo-Hansen, returning an interception 35 yards to the house. Buck strolled into the endzone from two yards out for a 27-0 lead at halftime.

Tri-Cities Prep got on the board in the third quarter on a Singleton 12-yard pass to Sheehan. The Indians recorded their final score of the game on a Marcil 1-yard run for a 34-8 lead after three quarters.

The Jaguars didn’t go away quietly in the final quarter, with Singleton finding Austin Hiett for a 12-yard touchdown pass followed by a 5-yard TD pass from Singleton to Cole Hiett. It was too late as Toledo held on for the win.

Toledo and Kalama played in Week 6 this season, with the Chinooks winning 32-13 in Kalama.
