Saturday's Boys Wrestling: Bearcats Claim Dave Holter Invite Title

KELSO — Five W.F. West wrestlers captured individual titles as the Bearcats took home the team championship at the Dave Holter Invite Saturday in Kelso.

Bo Davis (126), Darren Gray (138), Evan Moon (152), Isaac Revis (195) and Bryson Boyd (heavyweight) each won their respective weight classes.

“The boys wrestled pretty tough and we had a few boys win it,” Bearcats’ coach Jamie Rakevich said. “Staying close to home probably wasn’t a bad thing and we still got some tough competition.”

Cristo Parriot (120), Zach Evans (132) and Daniel Matagi (220) each finished second. Caleb Walters (132), Bryce Laufenberg and Connor Trodahl (145), Desmond Parriot (160) and Brock Guyette (182) all placed third.

“Everybody we took placed in the top four so it was a good team effort today,” Rakevich said.

Centralia placed fifth as a team, fielding just eight varsity players out of the 14 weight classes, and still wound up with seven of the eight placing.

Tigers’ Juan Gaspar won the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, after winning the 113-pound title, including a 16-1 tech fall semifinal victory over a two-time state competitor.

Sawyer Kassel took second in the 160-pound division, and Caleb Hilton placed second in the 170-pound weight class.

“[Kassel] actually wrestled really well,” Phillips said. “This is only his second year wrestling but he wound up making the finals. He’s getting better quickly.”

Alex Hicks-Avron (138) and Austin Lucht (195) each placed third, while Eddie Matias (132) and Justin Lake (152) each finished fourth.

“Overall for bringing eight scoring wrestlers and seven of them placing, we did alright," Phillips said. "We just need to work hard on correcting mistakes and not making the same ones match after match.”

Centralia will wrestle at W.F. West in a dual match at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
