KELSO — Toledo’s defense was on point against Kalama here on Friday as the Indians won 42-35 in the semifinals of the District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament game.
The Indians will play at 8 p.m. on Saturday at W.F. West in the District Championship game against Willapa Valley.
Andreas Malunat led Toledo with 12 points. Westin Wallace recorded nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
Fano Arceo-Hansen tallied 11 rebounds and four points and Bryce Marcil contributed eight points and nine rebounds.
Grant Vandenberg scored 12 points to lead the Chinooks.
Kalama’s Alex Dyer scored 25 points in the last meeting between the two teams, but Arceo-Hansen wanted him as a defensive assignment and held Dyer scoreless on Friday.
“Fano wanted him (Dyer),” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “He’s league MVP, half because of his defense.”
Hayden Farbo drew the defensive assignment of Chinook freshman Jackson Esary, who was held to five points compared to the 18 he scored in the previous game.
Neither team played great on the offensive end, with Toledo shooting 27 percent from the field while Kalama shot 18 percent from the field and made just two 2-point baskets in the game.
Toledo led 13-5 after one quarter and each team scored nine in the second quarter for a 22-14 Indian lead at the break.
Kalama switched to a zone in the second half that gave Toledo some problems in the third quarter, scoring just six points to allow the Chinooks to close the gap to just 28-25 going into the fourth. The Indians were able to regroup and hold in the final frame for the win.
Fallon noted the performance of Wallace, scoring a clutch basket at the end of the game off of a loose ball.
Willapa Valley defeated Life Christian 68-64 in the other semifinal, and Fallon knows his team will be ready to face the Vikings.
“They’re excited. They’re veterans, they know what to look forward to and just to be prepared,” Fallon said. “It’s one of those moments you wish you could be in your whole life, with a chance to cut down a net.”
Winlock Eliminates Morton-White Pass
ROCHESTER — The Cardinals built a big lead on Morton-White Pass in the first half and never looked back, defeating Morton-White Pass 47-35 in a District 4 2B Boys Basketball Tournament consolation game here on Friday.
Winlock advances to a winner-to-regionals game against Toutle Lake on Saturday at 1 p.m. at W.F. West.
Bryce Cline led all scorers with 14 points. Coleson Richendollar chipped in 10 points and Landon Tiemens tallied nine points for the Cardinals.
Kaleb Rashoff had nine points to lead MWP. Manuel Martinez contributed eight points and Dylan Richards and Tristan Tjelde each recorded six points.
The Cardinals led 16-11 after one quarter and held the T-Wolves to five points in the second quarter to build the lead to 29-16 at halftime. Winlock held MWP to five points in the third quarter to cruise to the victory in the final frame.
“Our defense, we were firing on all cylinders. Most of our offense came out of our defense. We played pretty well,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “They jumped it up in the second half defensively, but we didn't’ panic and made them guard and took our shots when we could and it was a big win for the Winlock Cardinals.”
Toutle Lake won both meetings in the regular season against Winlock, including a 89-48 win in the most recent contest on Jan. 25 in Toutle.
MWP finished the season with a 13-10 overall record.
Tigers Outlast Mules
CASTLE ROCK — Dawson Stanley recorded a double-double to keep Napavine’s season going in a 57-51 win over Wahkiakum in a District 4 2B boys basketball tournament consolation game here on Friday.
Stanley scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Ben Woodrum chipped in 13 points and Cade Evander was also in double digits with 11.
Luke Brown led the Mules with 17 points and Logan LaBerge contributed 16 points.
The Tigers led 27-21 at halftime and scored 20 points in the final frame to fend off Wahkiakum for the win.
Napavine faces Adna at 2:30 p.m. at W.F. West on Saturday in a winner to regionals game.
Mark Morris Ends W.F. West’s Season in Districts
LONGVIEW — The Monarchs heated up in the second half here Friday night, beating W.F. West 60-47 in a loser-out consolation semifinal game of the District 4 2A Boys Basketball Tournament.
Rarey Sommer scored 21 points with 14 rebounds and Reece Gibb added 20 points for the Monarchs, who will face Hockinson in a winner-to-regionals game on Saturday.
Mark Morris trailed 24-23 at halftime, but scored 22 in the third quarter to take the lead.
Colton Baker led W.F. West with 14 points. Colby White added 10 points and eight rebounds with four assists and six blocked shots.
The Bearcats finished the season with a 10-14 record. It was the final game for W.F. West seniors Baker, White, Eli Burdick-Wesen, Brock Jones and Troy Yarter.
