ADNA — The Pirates took another step in the right direction here Friday night as they dispatched Toledo 73-46 in a Central 2B League boys basketball tilt that could prove pivotal for final playoff seeding.
Adna held Toledo to just 2 points in the first quarter and then got hot on offense in the second frame to take a 36-13 lead into the intermission.
“The defense was fantastic in the first quarter and that’s exactly what we’d talked about because we had dug ourselves little hole at Wahkiakum,” Adna coach Luke Salme said.
The Pirates shot nearly 58 percent from the field in the game and buried 14 three pointers along the way. Chase Collins sank seven of those long range buckets himself on the way to 24 points.
“When you hit 14 threes you’re usually going to win,“ Salme said.
Braden Thomas led Adna with a game-high 28 points. Salme said it’s no secret how the senior playmaker generates so much offense.
“He does what he does by going and attacking with a full head of steam and being the best athlete on the court,” Salme said. “He’s a handful to stop.”
Carlo Arceo-Hansen led Toledo with 15 points and Walker Sorensen added nine points.
“This was a big week for us. We’d still been searching for our identity so to go 2-0 this week was huge,” said Salme. “We’re starting to climb that league ladder a little bit.”
Adna (9-7, 4-2 league) will play at Toutle on Wednesday.
Toledo (6-10, 2-4 league) will play at Win lock on Wednesday.
MORTON — The Timberwolves continued their winning ways here Friday night as they defeated Onalaska 57-45 in a Central 2B League boys basketball contest.
Four Morton-White Pass players scored in double figures on the night as the team shot fifty percent from the field on 48 shots. Gary Dotson notched a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double.
“He rebounded the heck out of the ball,” said MWP coach Chad Cramer of Dotson.
The Timberwolves won the rebound battle 44-36. Leytan Collette and Elliot Smith both scored a dozen points in the win while Hayden Young added 11 points.
Onalaska actually took a 28-16 lead into the half after winning the second quarter 21-10.
“If you’d watched us play in the second quarter you wouldn’t have believed we’d won a game all year long,” said Cramer. “They kicked our butt in the first half. They turned us over a ton and there wasn’t really a single thing we accomplished in the first half.”
Kayden Allison scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Loggers.
“Swear to God he didn’t miss. He played really well,” said Cramer. Had 16 at half. “He had 16 of those in the first half. He was the main reason they had a big lead.”
Carter Whitehead was Onalaska’s second leading scorer with nine points and only four Loggers scored on the night. As a team Onalaska wound up shooting just 29 percent from the field.
“We had an animated discussion at halftime. We made an adjustment that we’d been sitting on since the last time we played them and the kids really went out there and executed it well,” said Cramer.
The talk worked as the T-Wolves held ONalaska to just 17 points with six made baskets on 32 shots in the second half.
Cramer noted that center Josh Salguero was out with an illness and credited Elliot Smith for helping to fill the sizeable void left by the 6’4” freshman. Smith scored a dozen points, all in the second half.
Morton-White Pass (9-8, 5-2 league) will play at Wahkiakum next Friday.
Onalaska (11-4, 4-3 league) will play at Eatonville on Monday.
PE ELL — The Trojans’ struggles with putting the ball through the orange cylinder continued to cause them problems here on Friday as they dropped a Pacific 2B League boys basketball game to Ilwaco by a score of 56-37.
The Fishermen sank 53 percent of their shots in the contest while Pe Ell dropped in just 27 percent of their attempts. As a result Ilwaco boasted a 29-12 lead at the half before locking up the 19 point win.
“We had trouble. We had good looks but that’s been the thing we’ve been trying to build on all season is getting better at that,” said Pe Ell coach Clayburn Lusk.
Joe Nisbett led Ilwaco with 16 points and Parker Kaech notched 13 points.
“The Nesbitt kid is a big kid. What is he, 6’8”, 6’9”?” said Lusk. “We have that problem in Pe Ell. We only grow to like six foot. There’s very few oddities that grow to even 6’3.”
Kollin Jurek scored a game-high 19 points for Pe Ell and pulled down 8 rebounds. Joey McCalden added 8 points.
“Jurek played a heckuva game but we really need that third scorer,” noted Lusk.
Pe Ell (4-12, 3-11 league) will play at Northwest Christian on Thursday.
WINLOCK — Four Cardinals scored in double-digits here Friday, helping Winlock roll past Kalama 56-39 and stay perfect atop the Central 2B League boys basketball standings.
Nolan Swofford scored a career-high 15 points to pace Winlock, with Bryce Cline scoring 14, Coleson Richendollar adding 13 and Noah Patching chipping in 11.
Swofford had six points and five rebounds in the first quarter alone, helping the Cardinals to an 18-10 lead after one.
“He’s been playing really, really well,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “Every game he gets a little better. He’s scoring at the rim for us, and that’s something we could really use.”
Patching was also solid early on, Bamer said, which helped open up the floor for leading scorers Cline and Richendollar.
“Those two really stepped up in the first quarter, and it makes us really hard to guard when other kids are scoring,” he said.
Ryan Cooney led Kalama with 15 points. Max Cox added 10.
Winlock (13-2, 6-0 league) hosts Hoquiam in a non-league game on Monday, then plays at rival Toledo on Wednesday. The Cardinals’ last win over Toledo came on Jan. 23, 2009.
NAPAVINE — The Tigers got off to a slow start, and Toutle Lake’s Zach Swanson and Broc Keeton provided enough offense for the Ducks to pick up a 60-45 win here Friday in C2BL boys basketball action.
Swanson scored 26 points, while Keeton poured in 20 points.
Napavine trailed 16-6 after a quarter.
“We were a little too wound tight to start with,” Napavine coach Rex Stanley said. “We probably missed eight or 10 right-at-the-rim layups. But we could never climb back out of that hole.”
Keith Olson led Napavine with 22 points and 14 rebounds, but the Tigers could never cut the lead down to less than five in the fourth frame.
Swanson, an eighth-grader playing varsity ball, went 9 of 14 from the field.
“He definitely looks like he belongs. He’s big, and they roll out a tough team to guard,” Stanley said, adding that with Keeton, a few more outside shooters, and 6-foot-4 Chase Hadaller inside, the Ducks present a solid front. “They’ve got a real nice team. They can spread you out and they’re hard to guard.”
Napavine (10-5, 2-4 league) plays at Kalama on Wednesday.
MOSSYROCK — The 1A Eagles poured in 23 points in the first quarter and cruised here Friday in a 65-34 non-league win over Mossyrock.
Aiden Weist led Mossyrock with 11 points. Keegan Kolb added 10, and Gunnar Mulligan chipped in nine.
Elma led 41-16 by halftime.
Warren Nelson was a bright spot for the Vikings, according to coach Adam Deck.
“He did everything I asked him to do,” Deck said of the sophomore, who started for the first time. “He rebounded, blocked out, didn’t turn the ball over — I was proud of his effort.”
Brady Johnston led Elma with 16 points. Nick Church added 12.
Mossyrock (2-14, 0-6 league) hosts Rainier on Wednesday.
