Adult Softball: Dirt Dawgs Take Westside Classic Title

The Dirt Dawgs out of Seattle were the champions at the Westside Classic adult softball tournament at Borst Park in Centralia over the weekend.

On Saturday, the K-Club defeated the Northwest Braves 7-6 in the first game of the tournament. Levi Tate was the winning pitcher and Blake Bridges hit a 3-run home run for the K-Club.

In Game 2 on Saturday, the Dirt Dawgs defeated the host Westside Jacks 8-0. Colby Miller earned the win in the circle and Chance Fay hit a triple for the Jacks.

In Game 3 on Saturday, the Lacey A’s edged the K-Club, 8-7. Al Khalaf was the winning pitcher and Colby Miller and Colton Turner each hit a home run for the A’s. Tate hit a home run for the K-Club.

In Game 4 on Saturday, the NW Braves defeated the Jacks 4-3 in eight innings. Shayne Arndt earned the win in the circle. The Braves came back with three runs in the top of the sixth inning and earned the win with a run in the eighth.

In Game 5 on Saturday, the NW Braves won 5-2 against the K-Club. Greg Soule earned the win in the circle and Ken Thomsen hit a grand slam for the Braves.

In Game 6 on Saturday, the A’s defeated the Dirt Dawgs, 11-7. Dave Drotzman earned the win in a relief appearance. The A’s came back from a 7-4 deficit to earn the win.

In the final game of the day on Saturday, Lacey defeated the Braves, 2-1. Drotzman earned another win in the circle. Lonnie Cooney hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Darin Michael for the walkoff win in the seventh inning.



Sunday featured bracket play, starting with the Jacks defeating the K-Club, 9-6. Jimmy Miles pitched the Jacks to victory. Connor Vermilyea, Colton Wherry and Matt Wargacki all hit home runs for the Jacks and Brent Schick hit a home run for the K-Club. The Jacks jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held off a comeback attempt by the K-Club.

The Dirt Dawgs defeated the NW Braves 14-0 in five innings in a semifinal game. Colby Miller earned the win pitching for the Dirt Dawgs.

The A’s defeated the Jacks 7-0 in the other semifinal game. Drotzman earned another win in the pitching circle. It was scoreless until the seventh inning when the A’s were finally able to get to Westside pitcher Jimmy Miles and score seven runs. The loss meant a third place finish for the Jacks.

The Braves defeated the K-Club 5-4 in the fourth place game.

In the championship game, the Dirt Dawgs defeated the A’s 10-2. Colby Miller earned the win in the circle and two home runs by Kellen Bright helped the Dirt Dawgs claim the championship.

The tournament featured a wide age range, with Nick Morehouse being the youngest participant at 15 years old and Gary Lyons being the oldest participant at 71.

The Dirt Dawgs’ Kellen Bright was named the tournament MVP player and Colby Miller of the Dirt Dawgs was named the tournament’s pitching MVP.

The Hub City Fastpitch League has moved play to Wednesday’s at 6:30 p.m. through Aug. 27 at Borst Park in Centralia. Anyone who is interested in playing is welcome to join.
