Letter to the Editor: Clark the Youth Advocate Centralia School District Needs

Posted

As a child growing up in Centralia in the late 1970’s I often spent weekends at what many of us now affectionately call “Clark Park.” There, Beverly Clark was among the older kids, a serious student who, under her mom’s gentle lead, took care of not only her younger siblings, but any one of banana seat bicycle riding rugrats who might happen by hoping for a summer popsicle and a sprinkler, or, in the winter, a cup of cocoa and a game of cards.

Over time I’ve come to know and admire Bev for the firm and warm guidance she offers the children in her life.

Bev understands that fine arts reinforce vocational studies, that math and science are tools for leadership, and that physical education and sports are a tonic for reading and writing. She has first hand experience as an educator, and has worked with both special needs and highly capable students. Now she wants to share her depth of knowledge and experience, guiding the district in key decisions, which, at the end of the day, are all about taking care of- and making sound provision for- our communities youth and future.

Bev will consider everyone’s input: the parents of tomorrow’s adults, the city, the port district, fellow staff and faculty, and most importantly, when no one else will, she will listen to the kids. Bev believes in community. She values transparency. Bev will focus communication on the nuts and bolts of policy and budget so that the district she leads will demonstrate that, in Centralia, public education services value the whole child. Beverly Clark is the youth Advocate Centralia School District needs.
