Gov. Inslee Declares Emergency Over I-5 Overpass Damage

Gov. Jay Inslee on Friday declared a state of emergency in Lewis County in response to damage to an Interstate 5 overpass done by an oversized load on Oct. 5.

“It is imperative that we quickly repair this critical stretch of the interstate,” Inslee said in a statement. “I applaud our department of transportation, which responded to inspect the bridge, and revised travel across the structure to keep traffic off the damaged girders. We need a permanent solution and this proclamation will help our state get the resources to make the necessary repairs.

The incident occurred at the I-5 overpass at milepost 76 in Chehalis. Damages are estimated at $1 million.

The damage is continuing to limit access to the overpass, “and will require the emergency procurement of a contractor to repair the damage,” Inslee said.

The proclamation directs state agencies to “do everything reasonably possible” to resolve the incident.
