The Lewis County Chapter of the Washington State Music Teachers Association held its annual Play-Offs March 11 at the Centralia Church of the Nazarene.  Nineteen young pianists competed for the privilege of performing at the joint Washington and Oregon State Music Teachers convention to be held at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, Washington in June.  The winner, Simon Stehr, 18, and alternate, Sadie Brown, 17, are both students of Judy Meyers.  Stehr is the son of Chris and Margaret Stehr, of Centralia. Brown is the daughter of Nathan and Charity Brown, also of Centralia.  Both are enrolled in the Running Start Program at Centralia College.

Stehr and Brown will be performing in the WSMTA District IV Honors Recital along with other District instrumentalists.  The public is invited to this performance to be held 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Centralia Nazarene Church.

The judge for the competition was Dr. Karen Savage, associate professor of music, piano and accompanying at Washington State University.

The Play-Offs are the beginning event of the LCMTA Music Artistry Program which offers the opportunity for instrumentalists to demonstrate their technical proficiency as well as expressing their understanding of the repertoire specifically selected for this event.
