Lewis County Girls Chosen to Attend GeoGirls at St. Helens

Amber Engel, Napavine, and Delaney Spencer, Chehalis, have been chosen to participate in the GeoGirls event Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center.

The American Association of University Women, Lewis County chapter, sponsored two girls to attend with the stipulation that they be from Lewis County. GeoGirls chose from the applicants which two girls would attend.

GeoGirls is a partnership between the Mount St. Helens Institute, U.S. Geological Survey and numerous local and federal government agencies, universities and private corporations.

Those interested in participating in the program are asked to contact Abi Groskopf, science education director at the Institute, at agroskopf@mshinstitute.org or 360-891-5067 by July 31.

Newspaper Supplement Publishes Excerpt from Goffinet Book

The Golden Times, a supplement of the Lewiston Tribune in Lewiston, Idaho, in June published most of a chapter of Esther Goffinet’s book, “Ripples of a Lie.”

Goffinet is a Lewiston resident, but previously resided in Centralia.

The article included five pictures from the book, including a large photo of the Monarch mine at Kopiah in 1919.

Goffinet’s book gives her views on the 1919 clash in Centralia between a labor group known as the Wobblies and American Legion troops.

Goffinet’s father, Eugene Barnett, was a member of the labor union.

The Lewis County Historical Museum in Chehalis has the book available for sale.
