Tim Murphy: Not to mention, county or city managers are usually just career politicians. That usually means they make decisions based on keeping their jobs for the short term, not using experience gained through real jobs.

Jim Jenkins: Lewis County is the only conservative county west of the Cascades. That’s something worth hanging onto.

Tanya Hahn: This is disgusting. History is there to remind us not to repeat the past, to remember to do better. Seems to me we are going backward!

Daniel O’Neil: Why do we have Confederate statues here in Washington? The Confederacy tried to break away and go to war with the U.S. They shouldn’t be honored.

Aaron Henry: Why honor traitors to the U.S.? Why give ANY honor to a Jefferson Davis whose stated purpose in creating the confederacy was to preserve what he thought was his God-given right to enslave black people as a white man?

• Story: Local Lawmakers Say Capital Budget Could be Approved in November

The governor’s veto of the manufacturing B&O tax rate poisoned the budget waters. Manufacturers can easily leave Washington state, so we have to offer competitive tax rates to them in order for them to remain located here. The tax break made perfect sense. Not everyone will see higher property taxes. The Legislature’s McCleary plan is what should have been happening all along — a higher portion of funding from state coffers and less from local taxes, and expenditures that ensure an equitable education for all children across the state regardless of where they live. Urban House members held up the passage of the capital budget because they didn’t want to ensure rural residents’ access to water. The Senate did its job by passing a Hirst fix and stood ready to pass a capital budget. The intransigence of urban House members caused the failure of the capital budget. The solution is simple — pass a permanent Hirst fix, have it signed into law, and then pass an agreed-to capital budget.

Well said. I wish more people knew the true history of what they are yelling about. I find it laughable that the Democrats continue to blame the Republicans and those who don’t actually know the history just join in.

How long until the people laughably called “anti-fascists” (without a hint of irony) start the book-burning? For people who proclaim themselves to be against Nazis, they sure bring a sense of 1932 Germany with them. All that’s missing is Leni Riefenstahl glorifying them on film.

• Voie Commentary: Lewis County No Stranger to Extreme Right, Supremacist Groups

“Perhaps this is the beginning of a chapter where Lewis County will begin to become regionally known for its inclusivity and diversity, rather than for exclusivity and extreme views.” A bit of wishful thinking here. I think that Brittany Voie spoke too soon. Last Saturday, during the Loggers Jubilee parade in Morton (the same weekend of the Charlottesville white supremicist ralley) judges for the float competition awarded a first- and second-place ribbon to a float flying a Confederate flag. Kudos, though, to the Chehalis/ Centralia Summerfest parade committee that forbade the display of the same flag on one of their floats.
