Warren Pugh, until recently a Centralia resident, promotes chess in schools up and down the West Coast by donating chess supplies and offering cash awards at chess tournaments and chess club ladders. Pugh is a strong believer in the advantages of learning chess in developing minds. Learning chess improves reading and math scores, deductive reasoning, attention span and critical thinking. Pugh donated chess sets and chess clocks to Napavine Elementary School when they started a chess club. He also offered cash awards to winners of Napavine Elementary School’s chess club chess ladder last spring. A chess ladder is a form of competition where each player is assigned a rank. A lower ranked player can challenge those higher on the chess ladder, and if they win, move into that spot. Winners received prizes in October. Winners were, first place, $25, Nathaniel Serl; second place, $15, Brian Lee; third place, $10, Kale Jeg; and fourth place, chess set, Dillon Naillon.
