Tribal Distillery Bill Gets Backing of Herrera Beutler

The Chehalis Tribe could get the go-ahead to build a craft brewery and distillery, pending a bill that would repeal the prohibition of distilleries on tribal land.

“It’s time we remove this outdated rule and allow tribes to pursue the same economic opportunity on their land allowed on non-tribal land,” said Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, who is among the bill’s sponsors. “Economic empowerment for tribes, skills training for students and jobs for the community would add up to a win for Southwest Washington.”

Plans put forward by the Chehalis Tribe include a craft brewery and distillery, as well as connected educational and restaurant facilities. The tribe says it has begun the permitting process but cannot proceed until the 1834 law is repealed.

“The repeal will ensure that all aspects of the economic development project can commence and be completed as envisioned by the Tribe,” said Chehalis Chairman Harry Pickernell.
