Thurston County Activates Hazardous Weather Response, Calls for More Shelter Beds

Due to a prediction of wind and cold weather in the Puget Sound area through the middle of this week, Thurston County Public Health and Social Services has issued a “Code Blue” advisory to increase shelter capacity.

The advisory began Saturday and will last through Wednesday.

“This hazardous weather puts those in our community who do not have adequate shelter or heat sources at serious risk of hypothermia or even death, said Public Health Director Schelli Slaughter. “Activating ‘cold blue’ will allow for additional emergency shelter capacity to keep our most vulnerable populations safe, dry, and warm.”

Groups from Thurston County, cities, advocacy and nonprofit organizations working together as the Hazardous Weather Task Force have been developing a plan for the past six months to address harsh weather conditions and the effect they have on “unsheltered populations,” according to a news release from Thurston County.

The task force developed the “Code Blue” model for extremely cold or hazardous weather conditions. It outlines how organizations should take special measures to keep the homeless safe during weather events, and expands shelter services.

“The HWTF will assess the model used during this event to enhance the response in future events,” according to the Thurston County news release.

Expanded shelter options are available at the Thurston County Salvation and Union Gospel Mission for men and Women. First Christian Church and Interfaith Works offered more space Saturday night.

“Volunteers and donations of blankets, coffee, creamer, cup of soups, and other snacks are needed,” according to the release.

Donations can be dropped off after 6 p.m. at First Christian Church at 701 Franklin Street SE in Olympia.
