‘Tea, Cake and Roses’ Event Comes Back to Chehalis

England is simply too far away for most of us to travel to have our afternoon tea in an English garden, but lucky for us, there’s a local option.

The Friendly Neighbors Garden Club’s plant sale and fundraiser, featuring English tea, cake and scones, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at 284 Yates Road in Chehalis.

The property features 8 acres of English gardens and landscaping, more than 60 roses, eight garden “rooms” and four ponds.

The club asks for $10 donations from patrons.

According to organizer Anne Stedham, opening gardens for tours is popular in many cities, and commonplace in England for fundraisers.

All money raised will go toward local food banks, the Salvation Army, and scholarships for horticulture, landscape design and soil science students in select schools.

Money raised also is donated to “World Gardening” bringing safe water to people in Latin America, and to “Penny Pines” a USDA reforestation program in our state and and USA.

“We also spend some of the money on the public educational event we present in November and the free hands on children’s Plant a Shoe program we offer at the Southwest Washington Fair,” Stedham wrote in an email to The Chronicle.
