Mountaineers Open Season With Win at Forks

Opening the season with a long drive out on the peninsula, the Rainier boys basketball team escaped Forks with a 59-52 victory after a late Spartan rally Friday night.

Sophomore guard Josh Meldrum led the way for the Mountaineers with a game-high 30 points, while brothers James and Jimmy added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“We jumped ahead 31-13 at the half due in large part to the way we were able to finish in transition and hit catch and shoot threes against their zone,” Mountaineers coach Ben Sheaffer said. “It feels great to get this first one and we are excited about the stretches where we played together.”

Josh Meldrum scored half of his 30 points in the second quarter to help lead the way to a win as Rainier held a 31-13 advantage at half before a late Forks run.

The Mountaineers will hope to keep it rolling on the road next Tuesday against Winlock.
