Napavine used strong front row play to take Adna out in four sets on the road Thursday (23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-10) for its second straight C2BL volleyball win.
The Tigers improve to 5-2 overall and have now won four of their last five, while the Pirates drop to 5-3 overall and have now lost two of their last three.
“We were losing pretty good in the beginning,” Napavine coach Monica Dailey said. “Then the girls turned it around. They all played amazing.”
Adna, meanwhile, started strong, but missed six serves in the second game and quickly fell behind 6-0.
“I think we just kind of played safe, and I do think that Napavine came in with the mindset that they were not going to let a ball hit the floor,” Adna coach Wendie Dotson said. “They did a good job of covering the floor and picking up every ball that they could.”
Haily Murray led the attack for the Tigers with a game-high 20 kills to go with a perfect 100% serving.
“Haily had a really, really strong night at the net, which got us even more out of whack,” Dotson said. “It’s just one of those days where we were not firing on all cylinders.”
Freshman Keira O’Neill recorded 11 kills and four stuffed blocks for the Tigers, while Vannie Fagerness tallied a team-high 34 digs and Sydney Purvis added 29 digs.
Dailey commended setters Rae Sisson and Jordan Wilson for their hustle, and credited the front row play of Tanner Simpson, Grace Gall and Skyla Ettener for the victory.
“All of my girls on the front tow played really strong,” Dailey said.
Adna plays at Stevenson on Saturday. Napavine travels to Stevenson on Monday.
Indians Take T-Wolves in Straight Sets
Toledo got back on track in a sweep over Morton-White Pass Thursday at home, beating the Timberwolves in straight sets (25-12, 25-16, 25-18) for its second straight win.
The Indians improved to 3-5 overall and entered the match having lost four of their last five games. Morton-White Pass drops to 1-7 and has now lost three in a row after notching their first win over Stevenson on Feb. 23.
Chloe Kelly led the Timberwolves with a team-high 11 assists, while Katie Salguero scored a team-high six kills and two blocks. Kelly Pakar came off the bench to give the T-Wolves a much-needed spark, MWP coach Tammy Kelly said.
“We need to play more consistently and not in peaks and valleys,” Kelly added.
MWP is at home Monday against Onalaska for senior night.
Loggers Fall in Five to Mountaineers
Onalaska started off slow, regained momentum then fell in the fifth and final set to Rainier Thursday on the road (9-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19, 11-15).
“It was probably one of the best games I’ve seen all year,” Onalaska coach Jenny Hamilton said.
Freshman Dakota Hamilton led the loggers with 19-for-20 serving, four aces, a team-high 24 kills, 10 assists and 23 digs.
“Her kills tonight were the most beautiful kills I’ve seen,” Hamilton said “It was good to see her have a really nice game.”
Sophomore Morgan Hamilton was 9-for-10 serving with 21 kills and 25 digs, while Hannah James was 13-for-14 serving with eight assists, 21 digs and three blocks. Raelee Holmes was 13-for-14 serving and Kayla Osborn added 11 assists.
“(Rainier) didn’t kill us on hits,” Hamilton said. “We lost on unforced errors. We did it to ourselves with silly mistakes.”
Onalaska drops to 1-7 on the year and has now lost seven straight. Rainier improves to 4-4 and has now won two of its last three. Onalaska travels to Morton-White Pass on Monday, while Rainier travels to Kalama on Monday.
Cardinals Sweep Stevenson
Winlock ran its win streak to three in a dominant sweep over Stevenson (25-6, 25-9, 25-15) Thursday on the road.
The Cardinals’ win over Onalaska on Feb. 25, which gave them their first win of the season and ended a five-game losing streak, secured them a spot at districts for the first time in recent memory. Winlock Athletic Director Nick Bamer and volleyball coach Chastity Pennington have been unable to determine the last time the volleyball team advanced to districts.
“It’s an accumulation of the past three years of working hard and it’s starting to pay off,” Pennington said. “It’s all clicking. I’m really, really proud of them… it was the serves that brought it all home tonight.”
Kaitlynn Mitchell served eight-straight points in the first set, followed by 10 straight during the second set, with a combined 10 aces among the two sets.
“Her and Karlie Jones have been on fire,” Pennington said. “They’ve stepped up their games.”
Winlock (3-5) will look to continue its hot streak when it faces Toledo at home on Monday.
