Rochester’s bats were on fire against Centralia on Sunday, pounding 10 hits to secure a 15-1 win in five innings in the championship game of the Brian Cox Memorial tournament at Bearcat Stadium in Chehalis on Sunday.
It was the first tournament title for Rochester’s summer legion team.
“We’ve been right there in tournaments. It was good and a very fun tournament. Bryan (Bullock) and Rex (Ashmore) do a great job of hosting. It was a fun weekend all in all. The kids enjoyed themselves, I enjoyed myself and that’s what baseball supposed to be.”
At the plate, Rochester’s Jared Winters had two hits and a run. Bodey Smith had two triples and two runs and Keegan Goldrick added two hits including a triple and two runs.
Cameron Erickson was 2 for 2 for Centralia.
Duncan Rowe pitched a complete game for Rochester in the win. Rowe, who didn’t throw at all during the high school season due to injury, threw his first full speed game since returning to action.
“He really hadn’t pitched in over a year. To get up there and do what he did, it was impressive,” Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said. “He came in that first game and was nervous beyond belief. We told him he was starting Game 2. He went right out there and hit the leadoff hitter, but he finally settled in and got in a groove.”
Titus-Will managed three hits in the game, but was pleased with their performance overall in the tournament.
“When you have a couple weeks off before you play again, our pitching wasn’t as sharp as it needs to be to play five games in three days,” Centralia coach Rex Ashmore said. “We came up on the short end of some pitching at the end, unfortunately. It was in a game like that, we’ll get better and that’s what our summer is for.”
Centralia faces Timberline at Wheeler Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a doubleheader, while Rochester faces River Ridge in Lacey on Wednesday.
Semifinal Games
Titus-Will Takes Down Renegades in Semifinals
Titus-Will scored six runs in the fifth inning to secure a 10-6 win over the I-5 Renegades in the semifinals of the Brian Cox Memorial tournament on Sunday in Centralia.
Titus-Will’s Jeremy Wood was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and and Derek Beairsto had a 3-run triple in the fifth.
Brit Lusk was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs and Luke Wichert was 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI for the Renegades.
The Renegades led 2-0 after one inning and 6-1 after four innings. Titus-Will took the lead with the big fifth inning and secured the win with three insurance runs in the sixth.
Rochester Squeaks Past Olympia in Semifinals
Rochester scored two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and held on down the stretch for a 5-4 win over Olympia in a Brian Cox Memorial tournament semifinal game at Ed Wheeler Field on Sunday morning.
Jared Winters had three hits and two stolen bases and Bodey Smith had two hits including a triple.
Smith pitched 6 ⅓ innings and allowed five hits and four runs in the win.
“Bodey (Smith) did his normal thing. He got himself into some jams but the defense helped him out,” Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said. “To get out there and compete regardless of the situation, he’s turning out to be a pretty decent pitcher.”
Quarnstrom noted it was a fun game to be a part of.
“Both teams squandered a fair amount of opportunities. Both teams threw guy out at plate,” Quarnstrom said. “There were a lot of good defensive plays. Both teams could have came out on top.”
Saturday’s Results
Centralia Tops Lower Columbia
Centralia Titus-Will and Lower Columbia each scored five runs in the seventh inning, but it was Titus-Will who held on for a 9-6 win in a Brian Cox Memorial tournament game at Wheeler Field on Saturday.
Derek Beairsto, Zack Rone and Noah Aliff combined for the win on the mound for Titus-Will.
“All three of them pounded the strike zone very well,” Centralia coach Rex Ashmore said. “Noah gave up some runs (in the seventh) but we two of our three errors in that inning. Our pitching overall was much better, much sharper than we had been.”
Benito Valencia was 2 for 3 at the plate for Centralia.
Centralia Coasts Past River Ridge
Centralia Titus-Will recorded 14 hits to earn a 12-9 win over River Ridge in a Brian Cox Memorial tournament game at Ed Wheeler Field on Saturday.
Dominic Aguirre was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and Tyler Milton was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Zack Rone had two hits including a double and two RBIs and Cameron Erickson also had two hits with an RBI for Centralia.
The game was tied at eight after four innings before Titus-Will took the lead with three runs in the fifth frame and added an insurance run in the seventh.
Rochester Fends Off Ridgefield
Keegan Goldrick pitched a complete game to lead Rochester to a 5-1 win in a Brian Cox Memorial tournament game in Chehalis on Saturday.
Goldrick had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning and had seven strikeouts in a winning performance.
“He was dealing. He was throwing strikes whenever he wanted to, it was really good to see,” Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said. “It was really positive for him. He had some good starts in high school, this was a big step for him.”
Renegades Shutdown Awesome Ford
Cade Haller and Luke Wichert combined to allow just two hits on the mound for the Renegades in a 7-1 win over Awesome Ford in a Brian Cox Memorial tournament game on Saturday in Chehalis.
Haller got the start and pitched six innings, allowing one hit an no earned runs with four strikeouts. Wichert came on in the seventh and finished off the win.
Haller had two hits and two runs and Kaelin Hazen was 3 for 4 with a run and two RBIs.
Kaleb Rashoff was 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs, three RBIs and a solo home run in the third inning.
The Renegades scored five runs in the first inning to secure the win early.
Ridgefield Edges Renegades
Ridgefield scored nine runs over the final two frames to come from behind and win 9-8 in a Brian Cox Memorial Tournament opening game at Bearcats Stadium on Friday night.
Kaleb Rashoff got the start for the Renegades and threw five innings, allowing no earned runs with 13 strikeouts and two walks.
Jaiyden Camoza was 2 for 4 with a double and a run and Kaelin Hazen was also 2 for 4 with a run.
Rashoff was 2 for 4 with a double, triple, two runs and two RBIs and Garrett VonMoos added two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
The I-5 Renegades scored a run in the second and third inning and added three runs in each the third and fourth frames for a commanding 8-0 lead. Ridgefield scored four runs in the sixth inning and took the lead with five runs in the seventh.
Renegades Clobber Rochester
The I-5 Renegades pounded out 15 hits en route to a 17-3 win in five innings against Rochester in the Brian Cox Memorial tournament on Saturday in Chehalis.
Jaiyden Camoza recorded a triple, three RBIs and two runs and Kaelin Hazen was 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and three runs.
Kaleb Rashoff was 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs for the Renegades.
Keegan Goldrick had a double and three RBIs for Rochester.
The Renegades scored 10 runs in the third inning to break the game open.
