Wednesday's 2B Girls Basketball Roundup: Elwood Leads Pirates Past Napavine

Posted

ADNA — Isabella Elwood had a monster night, and Adna slowed down the Tigers early on to pick up a 58-48 win here Wednesday night in Central 2B League girls basketball action.

Elwood, a senior forward, scored 27 points and hauled in 15 rebounds, both of which were career-high marks.

“She was great in the post,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “She gave us a post presence tonight, and we were able to establish that in the first quarter.”

The Pirates led 15-5 after the first frame.

“We talked about pushing the tempo,” Bannish said. “Obviously they have two really good players (Mollie Olson and Melissa Lee), and we thought with our depth we could push the tempo.”

The Tigers bounced back, going 8 of 11 from the field for 17 points in the second quarter, and whittled the lead down to 7 points late in the game.

Darian Humphrey, however, hit a 3-pointer with a minute left to put Adna’s lead back to the final 10-point cushion.

Kenya Lorton added 15 points for Adna, while Lee led Napavine with 23.

Bannish cited Lili Glover for her defensive work on Napavine’s Olson, who finished with 12 points.

“I thought she did an excellent job,” the coach added.

Adna (2-0, 1-0 league) plays at Onalaska in the second game of a boys-girls doubleheader on Friday. Napavine (0-1) plays at Pe Ell on Friday.

Pe Ell Takes Care of Morton-White Pass

RANDLE — Pe Ell traveled to Randle to face the Timberwolves in a league matchup, and the Trojans came away with a 46-36 victory in Central 2B League action here on Wednesday.

Pe Ell’s Dakota Brooks led all scorers with 14 points and added 10 rebounds, and Sudie Blankenship contributed 10 points for the Trojans. Sierra Dotson led the Timberwolves with 11 points.

The Trojans led 8-6 after one quarter, and padded the lead to 22-16 at halftime. Pe Ell scored 14 points in the third and 10 in the fourth, and held off MWP for the victory.

“It was more of the same. We’re young and are having trouble handling the ball with lots of turnovers and a low field goal percentage,” MWP coach Tom Griffith said. “It was the same story as last saturday against Mossyrock. The combo of those two just get you, missing so many possessions by turning the ball over. It’s kind of a double-edged sword.”

MWP (1-2, 0-1) hosts Rainier at Morton on Friday in a league contest, while Pe Ell (1-2, 1-0) hosts Napavine Friday in a C2BL game.

Wahkiakum Crushes Winlock

WINLOCK — Wahkiakum scored 22 points in the first quarter and cruised to a 60-10 win over Winlock in Central 2B League basketball action here on Wednesday.

Rianna Whitehead led the Cardinals with 5 points. Peyton Souvenir led all scorers with 16 points, and Macie Elliott added 15 points for the Mules.

Winlock made two field goals and didn’t score in the second or third quarter.

“We played hard. No one gave up and we didn’t hang our heads. But 35 turnovers and only shot the ball 18 times, we didn’t really compete,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “I can’t fault our effort, we just didn’t come ready to play.”

Winlock (1-3, 0-1) travels to face Kalama on Friday in another C2BL matchup.

Vikings Pull Away from Toledo in C2BL Opener

MOSSYROCK — The Vikings had three players hit double figures here Wednesday night in a 46-31 win over Toledo to open Central 2B League girls basketball play.

Ava Nelson scored 10 points with a whopping 17 rebounds, Paige Moorcroft added 11 points and 10 boards, and Stephanie Fried recorded 10 points for Mossyrock.

Mossyrock held a slim 18-15 lead at the intermission, but outscored Toledo 28-16 after the break.

“That defensive adjustment really helped us out a lot,” Mossyrock coach Darrin Bullock said. “Really tonight it was a defensively complete team effort. Lots of communication going on. I just can’t say enough about how well we’ve been doing, defensively.”

Anna Tauscher led Toledo with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

“Toledo was definitely a very fundamental, scrappy basketball team,” Bullock said. “Offensively, they gave us some fits there in the first half.”

Mossyrock (3-0, 1-0 league) plays at Toutle Lake on Friday night. Toledo hosts Wahkiakum the same night.
