PE ELL — Adna’s Haley Rainey pitched quite the performance in the circle to lead the Pirates to a 5-1 win over Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in a non-league softball game here on Wednesday.
Rainey allowed just two hits and no earned runs over seven innings of work while striking out 11 batters. She helped her own cause at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs.
“She did an excellent job. She settled down in the second inning and threw like she’s capable of,” Adna coach Bruce Pocklington said. “Sometimes she thinks she has to throw hard but when she settles in and becomes herself, she’s very difficult to hit.”
Ruby Bower was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Olivia Rodriguez had a hit and a RBI for the Pirates.
PWV’s Kamryn Adkins started in the circle and pitched 4 ⅔ innings, allowing nine hits, five earned runs and three strikeouts. Olivia Matlock relieved Adkins and pitched the final 2 ⅓ innings, allowing no hits and no earned runs with four strikeouts.
Katelyn McGough had a double and Kamryn Adkins had the other hit for the Titans. Katie Adkins scored the only run for PWV.
The Titans started the scoring in the first inning. Katie Adkins earned a free pass and moved to third base on a single by Kamryn Adkins. Katie Adkins was able to score on a passed ball in the next at-bat.
“The name of the game tonight was Haley Rainey. She was on fire, give her credit, she did well,” PWV coach Ken Olson said. “Our team does not do what it did tonight but it happened. We’re better than that but they were better than us tonight.”
Adna took the lead in the fourth inning as Rodriguez hit a single to bring home Rainey and Skye Snow. The Pirates padded the lead in the fifth inning on a single by Bower that brought home Karlee VonMoos, Rainey and Snow for the eventual final score.
“Our team played pretty clean today, pitched well, played good defense and had timely hits. We’ve just got to keep doing that,” Pocklington said.
Adna (5-1, 3-0) hosts Toutle Lake on Thursday in a Central 2B League contest while PWV (3-1, 2-0) hosts Ocosta in a Pacific 2B League doubleheader on Saturday at noon in Pe Ell.
Big First Inning Helps Bearcats Defeat Tigers
BATTLE GROUND — W.F. West scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back, defeating Battle Ground 9-5 in a non-league softball game here on Wednesday.
Paetynn Lopez had a home run and three RBI and Alisha Anderson added a 2-run home run. Ashlyn Whalen and Annika Waring were each 2-for-3 for the Bearcats.
Kamy Dacus pitched all seven innings for the Bearcats and struck out eight batters in the win.
W.F. West’s six-run first inning was thanks in large part to both home runs being hit out of the park in the first. The Bearcats added three insurance runs in the fourth.
“We were just seeing the ball well and hitting the ball hard,” W.F. West coach Caty Lieseke said. “We really saw our ability to compete with different levels of teams and different kinds of games. I think as a coaching staff we’re walking away with a better understanding of what everyone is capable of.”
W.F. West (5-0) opens Evergreen 2A Conference games on Monday against Rochester at Recreation Park in Chehalis.
T-Wolves Blow Out Chinooks
MORTON — Morton-White Pass scored nine runs in the second inning to cruise to a 17-0 win in four innings over Kalama in a Central 2B league softball game here on Wednesday.
Jaiden Linder threw all four innings for the T-Wolves, striking out nine batters while allowing just three hits and two walks.
“She did a great job and threw strikes. She’s come a long way from last year,” MWP coach Rob Hazen said. “At the end of the season, she got real strong and she pitched a great game tonight.”
At the plate, Kylie Davis had a triple and three RBI and Belen Salguero had an RBI single. Hailey and Sydney Brooks each had a hit and a RBI as did Hannah Smathers.
Emmalee Hazen was 2-for-4 with five RBI and hit a grand slam to end the game in four innings.
“We started out slow, one run in the first inning. We didn’t attack the ball and scored nine runs in the second,” Hazen said. “It started with the young kids in the bottom of the order that got us going and ignited us. We have 24 kids, we played 21 of them. We’re getting better and improving.”
MWP (2-1, 2-1) travels to Winlock on Monday for a C2BL game.
Castle Rock Shoots Past Onalaska
ONALASKA — Onalaska managed just three hits as Castle Rock took advantage in a 16-0 win in five innings in a non-league softball game here on Wednesday.
Olivia Mitten, Alex Cleveland-Barrera and Hannah James each had a hit for the Loggers.
The Rockets scored eight runs in the first inning and plated five more in the fourth inning followed by three runs in the fifth inning to bring the mercy rule into effect.
Castle Rock collected 10 hits in the game.
“Defensively, we were pretty decent. A couple errors kind of hurt us and they got in time with my pitchers,” Onalaska coach Rich Teitzel said. “Alex Cleveland-Barrera played a great third base, she was solid over there all night.”
Onalaska (1-2, 1-0) hosts Toledo on Friday in a Central 2B League game.
