Wednesday's Prep Girls Soccer: Toledo Edges Tigers Late

Posted

NAPAVINE — Toledo needed a pair of goals late in the contest here on Wednesday in order to get past a resurgent Tigers team by a score of 3-2 in a Central 2B League girls soccer showdown.

“It was such a level playing field tonight. Both teams fought super, super hard,” said Napavine coach Emily McCarthy. “It was super intense. It got aggressive. It’s a tough loss but my girls played really well considering last time, Toledo beat us 9-0.”

Marina Smith gave Toledo a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 18th minute. Napavine’s Chloe Stewart then answered back with a goal of her own in the 32nd minute that sent the teams to the intermission all knotted up at 1-1.

Napavine claimed a 2-1 lead five minutes into the second half when Halee Williams punched in a penalty kick. However, goals by Smith and Rose Dillon in the 62nd and 64th minutes, respectively, allowed Toledo to take the final advantage.

McCarthy was particularly pleased with the defensive effort her team displayed.

“One of our outside mids, Mercedez Becerra, she did really well tonight. Toledo has a really good player, Briza Gallegos, and Mercedez did a really good job of locking her down tonight,” said McCarthy.

Toledo coach Noel Vasquez sounded relieved to leave the city on the hill with a win in hand.

“I think the girls were a little too confident going to Napavine and I think we took them for granted,” said coach Noel Vazquez. “They played better than us for most of the first half but we recovered.”

Napavine (6-6, 3-3 league) will travel to play Toutle Lake on Monday. Toledo (9-4, 4-2) will host Ilwaco on Monday.
