Wednesday's Girls Soccer: Toledo Takes the Fight Out of Toutle

TOLEDO — Toutle Lake was unable to muster a shot on goal here Wednesday as Toledo blanked the Fighting Ducks 6-0 in a non-league girls soccer meeting.

“I think our defense did a really good job today stepping up,” said Toledo coach Noel Vasquez, who credited Caitlin Olson for leading the defensive unit.

Toledo’s offense was powered by Maryssa Peters who scored her second straight hat trick. Peters got things going with a goal in the 38th minute that was assisted by Alyssa Gaskill and followed up four minutes later with a goal that was assisted by Grace Tauscher. Then, in the 61st minute, Peters finished the haberdashery special thanks to another assist by Tauscher.

Peters then began spreading the ball around and fed Rose Dillon for a goal in the 68th minute. Vanessa Rodrigues followed suit eight minutes later with an unassisted goal and Marina Smith finished the scoring in the 80th minute thanks to another assist from Gaskill.

All told, Toledo put up 27 shots with 16 of those shots on frame.

Vasquez said he’s excited by the skills that Peters has been showing off this week.

“I think she’s locking in a little better. She’s been a little more smart with her decisions when she’s taking shots. She’s matured a lot from a sophomore to junior and it really helps the team by drawing the attention of the defense,” noted Vasquez.

Vasquez added that starting midfielder Marina Smith was hampered by a sore hamstring and only saw limited action.

“Grace Tauscher definitely stepped up huge today and played midfield,” Vasquez said. “It’s a big transition going from your number one midfielder who opens up the field for everyone to your number two.”

Toledo (2-1) will host Napavine on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Cardinals’ Wings Clipped at Kalama

KALAMA — Winlock was blanked until the final moments here in a 7-1 loss to the Chinooks in non-league girls soccer action.

Gabby (Cruz) passed it to her and Alexa got the shot up from the corner of the 18...It was nice to get on the board.” said Ziese. “We got to see some different things tonight. We got to move some people around just to see how it would work.”
