ADNA — The Lady Pirates kept rolling here on Wednesday, defeating Winlock 6-2 in a Central 2B League girls soccer match.

Adna scored one goal in the first half by Payton Aselton with an assist from Presley Smith in the 12th minute for a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Adna coach Julie Aselton was not happy with her team’s first half performance, so she sent in her JV team to start the second half.

“I think they did a lot better in the second half. We had some great runs, but Winlock was doing a good job just packing the box. They made some great passes and Joey Swenson gave us a great spark. She got one of our goals there and got everybody pumped up again.”

Swenson scored in the 44th minute on an assist from Kiyah Kennedy to spark the Pirates. Olivia Rodriguez converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute and Aselton added her second of the game in the 57th minute.

Brynn Arrington scored in the 59th minute on an assist from Summer White and Rachel Burke scored unassisted in the 63rd minute to cap the scoring for Adna.

Winlock’s goals were scored by Alexa Barragan in the 41st and 75th minutes. Cheleena Squibb recorded four saves in the loss.

Winlock coach Brian Ziese was proud of his team’s effort, considering the Cardinals are the first team to score on Adna this season.

“Nobody’s scored on them so that was one of our goals. Adna was knocking around and being good, we were holding, it was a good game,” Ziese said. “They didn’t come at us hard too. It made it nice that we actually scored to get a little bit of that excitement of getting a goal against them. It was nice, it gave our girls confidence that they can score against anybody if they work at it.”

Aselton subbed in her starters throughout the second half and believed they heard her message by playing much better in the second half.

“They all knew what I was looking for. I think they all went in and played a much better second half, talking more, passing better,” Aselton said. “We had that discussion where it’s one of those games where we deal with it now. We had a lot of individuals who were working hard but not playing together as a team”

Adna (6-0) travels to Toutle Lake on Monday for a 4 p.m. C2BL game while Winlock (2-5) hits the road to face Toledo on Monday.
