Wednesday's Girls Soccer: Adna Takes Down Onalaska

ADNA — Adna and Onalaska played another close contest here on Wednesday, with the Pirates earning another 1-0 victory in a Central 2B League girls soccer game.

The Pirates lone goal came midway through the second half. Adna’s Payton Aselton was fouled in Onalaska territory and she bended a free kick just out of reach of Onalaska goalkeeper Alex Cleveland-Barrera.

Adna had 19 shots against the Loggers.

“We seemed to control the middle of the field better this game. Payton had more time and space but Onalaska had some spot on passing tonight,” Adna coach Juli Aselton said. “Onalaska does a good job with double teaming us. It was a good win and I’m sure we will see more of Onalaska before the season ends. Meanwhile, we will continue to work on creating more opportunities to score.”

Makaela Meister made seven saves in the clean sheet for the Pirates.

Adna (6-2-1, 2-0) travels to Napavine on Monday while Onalaska (5-2-1, 1-1) hosts Ilwaco on Monday in a C2BL game.

Toledo Edges Ocosta

TOLEDO — Toledo fired 33 shots at the Ocosta net here on Wednesday, but only one shot went in for a 1-0 win in a Central 2B league girls soccer game.

Toledo’s Marina Smith scored in the 88th minute on an assist by Rose Dillon. Kaylee Viegel made four saves for the Indians.

Even in the win, Toledo coach Noel Vazquez wasn’t happy with the way the team performed.

“I don’t think the girls played to the level that was expected. They were a little too confident, especially when Ocosta came with 10 players to start,” Vazquez said. “They like to look at stats. Napavine beats them, they cannot put a result in their head before it even starts. Not taking anything from Ocosta, their game plan was to take us to penalty kicks where it could have been anyone’s game.”

Vazquez gave kudos to Ocosta’s goalkeeper, who made plenty of saves to keep the Wildcats in the game. He also commended Nyssa Castro, coming on in the last 10 minutes and helping Toledo produce chances, including Smith’s goal.

“I think our team had plenty of chances. We just didn’t put them in when they needed to go in,” Vazquez said. “This is one of those wake up calls. It doesn’t matter in the preseason, it’s a regular season game.”

Toledo (6-3, 1-1) travels to Life Christian on Monday for a C2BL game.

Napavine Earns Overtime Victory Against Life Christian

TACOMA — Napavine needed more than 80 minutes once again here on Wednesday, and were able to pull out a 2-1 win in overtime against Life Christian in a Central 2B League girls soccer game.

Napavine got on the board first in the fourth minute on a goal by Makensee Taliaferro Bouge. The lead didn’t last long as Life Christian’s Elysse Loyola scored in the 13th minute for a 1-1 tie that would last the rest of regulation.

In the second minute of the first overtime, Natalya Marcial found the back of the net for the Tigers to secure the win.

Napavine goalkeeper Zaylii Orozco made five saves.

“Honestly, it didn’t go the way we probably thought. Our last game we played against Life Christian was 8-5,” Napavine coach Emily McCarthy said. “The girls just didn’t look like they were mentally in the play. One of the things we’ve been working on this season is mentally being prepared for games and consistency. They played well but they could have done better.”

McCarthy highlighted the play of Kazmira Hardenbrook, working hard and playing aggressively and never giving up. She also commended Calyx Pope on the outside wing, making some pretty runs down the sideline.

Napavine (5-4, 2-0) hosts Adna on Monday in a C2BL contest.

Note: Winlock fell to Ilwaco 1-0 in Ilwaco on Wednesday. The Cardinals (1-5-2, 0-2) hosts Kalama on Monday.
