ADNA — Adna’s Cierra Swenson scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 Pirates victory against Toledo in a Central 2B League girls soccer game here on Wednesday.

Swenson scored on an assist from Payton Aselton in the 22nd minute.

“We had several other close opportunities tonight with the ball bouncing around in front of Toledo’s goal and a few well placed free kicks that (Kaylee) Viegel made some good saves on tonight,” Adna coach Juli Aselton said. “Although Adna worked hard on working together and trying to find open teammates, it is something we continue to work on.”

Aselton was pleased with the way Swenson moved around on the field and found open space. She also commended Kayden McCombs playing well at defensive midfield in the first half.

Toledo goalkeeper Kaylee Viegel made 15 saves and coach Noel Vazquez was impressed with the performance.

“Today, we got to face a little bit of adversity. We had 12 players, Kaylee Viegel stepped up huge for us in the goal,” Vazquez said. “Every single save, all goal type shots, hard shots, diving saves. The girl just faced up a really good Adna team and stepped up to the plate. They battled their hearts out.”

Vazquez mentioned Paige Hill and Keylin Plancarte stepping up big for Toledo in a tough spot.

“We made some plays that kept us in the game, sometimes we looked dangerous too. The girls felt like they left it all out there today. I think we got to see our full potential for the rest of the season if we play like we did tonight,” Vazquez said. “Keylin (Plancarte), she definitely stepped up big today. She made some big plays, I got to see her make some moves and play some defense. She stuck to Aselton like glue today and was taking advantage of a starting opportunity. That was pretty mesmerizing.”

Adna (8-2-1, 4-0) travels to Toutle Lake on Monday while Toledo (7-4, 2-2) hosts Onalaska on Monday in a C2BL game.

Winlock Falls to Ocosta

The Cardinals played a hard fought match against the Wildcats here on Wednesday but lost 2-1 in a Central 2B League girls soccer match.

Ocosta’s Katelynn Denny scored the first goal of the game in the 28th minute. Winlock answered in the 31st minute on a goal by Gabby Cruz with an assist by Alexa Barragan for a tie game at intermission.

Nevaeh Smith scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute for the Wildcats.

Winlock goalkeeper Kiya Peppers made 13 saves.

“We played a great game. Both teams were battling each other, it would have given us a great win against a better team too but we could not get anything to fall for us,” Winlock coach Brian Ziese said. “It was one of those games where we went back and forth. Both teams knocked it around. We had a free kick that was really good too. It wasn’t our night to get that extra one even to tie it. The girls played an excellent game and I’m happy with the effort.”

Ziese commended Barragan, Cruz and Angela Gil-Munoz for their effort against Ocosta.

Winlock (1-7-2, 0-4) travels to Lakeview Monday at 4:30 p.m. to take on Life Christian in a league contest.

Loggers Let Their Legs Do the Talking Against Tigers

ONALASKA — The Loggers used a three-goal first half against Napavine to propel themselves to a 5-2 win here on Wednesday in Central 2B League girls soccer play.

Napavine added a goal in the second half of play but was unable to close the gap.

Beavers Tame Grizzlies

HOQUIAM — Tenino was able to best the Grizzlies 4-1 here in a 1A Evergreen League girls soccer showdown on Wednesday.

“We started the game really well during the first 15 minutes. We were getting behind their defense all the time. We just weren’t finishing. Credit to their goalkeeper, she made some good saves tonight,” said Tenino coach Kevin Schultz.

Alivia Hunter got the Beavers going with a goal off a free kick in the 8th minute of play. Twenty minutes later, it was Grace Vestal finding the back of the net off of a perfectly placed corner kick from Hunter.

Hoquiam was able to notch a score as time expired in the first half when Taylor Strom punched in a penalty kick.

The Beavers bounced back quickly though when Brieanna Dell scored off of a corner kick in the 49th minute.

“It was beautifully bent off the far post and bounced off into the goal,” noted Schultz of Dell’s first score on the night.

Then, in the 72nd minute Dell lit up the scoreboard again thanks to an assist from Miner.

The Beavers put up 25 shots on the night compared to just six for Hoquiam. As a result Tenino goalie Abby Severse notched just one save on the night.

“I thought we controlled the game well, we just didn’t finish very well,” said Schultz. “We gritted it out. We made it happen and we’ve got wins on back-to-back days.”

Schultz made sure to give credit to Hunter in particular for her well rounded play.

“She really locked it down on the back line and limited the other teams’ chances,” said the Beavers’ coach.

Tenino (9-0-1, 4-0 league) will host Montesano next Tuesday.
