ADNA — Adna held Kalama to single digit scoring in all four quarters to cruise to a 61-18 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Wednesday.
Payton Aselton led all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds and Makaela Meister added 12 points. Kaylin Todd was also in double figures with 10 points.
Lily Given led the Chinooks with eight points.
Kalama made just seven field goals all game while Adna was 28 of 62 from the field.
“We have a good problem. I have eight girls that have played a lot of basketball for me. It’s been the same mix for the last two years and they’ve all played a ton and you can see it in the scoring, it’s well balanced,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “We had 18 assists, very unselfish. The pressure was good, we had 44 at half. We were mixing up our pressure stuff and playing some different lineups trying to figure out who we are.”
Adna led 22-7 after one quarter and built the lead to 44-11 at halftime. The Pirates held the Chinooks to seven points in the second half to cruise to the win.
Bannish was pleased with the play of Aselton and Summer White in her first varsity action in important minutes for Adna.
Adna (1-0) hosts Taholah on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on the backend of a boys-girls doubleheader.
Jaguars Maul Tigers
Centralia kept up with Emerald Ridge in the first quarter but was outscored 20-4 in the second quarter as the Jaguars pulled away for a 74-41 win in a non-league girls basketball game in Centralia on Wednesday.
Carissa Kaut led the Tigers with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Jasmine Mora added 11 points and Madelinn Corwin chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
Maya Bennett was the leading scorer for Emerald Ridge with 17 points and Savannah Fickle tallied 12 points. Monique Carter was also in double figures with 10 points.
Emerald Ridge led 23-17 after the first quarter, but the big second quarter for the Jaguars put the Tigers in a 43-21 hole at halftime. The Jaguars won the second half 31-20 to cruise to the win.
“I think for 4A, Emerald Ridge, who brought pressure nonstop, it was like playing our cross town rivals from the get go,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “The girls did a great job and played the best so far early in the season. The constant pressure got to us, give our girls credit, they kept battling. We almost won the fourth quarter and played a lot better than we did the first night out. We’ll keep building. I love the girls energy and the team chemistry and we’re seeing a lot of positive things.”
Centralia (0-2) travels to Montesano on Friday for a non-league game.
Loggers Defense Prevails in Duck Country
TOUTLE — Onalaska fell behind early here on Wednesday but used a perfect defensive effort in the second quarter to salvage a 48-30 win over the Ducks in their season opening non-league girls basketball contest.
Toutle Lake staked out a 17-11 lead after one quarter but mustered just 13 points the rest of the game. That sputtering offensive output included a scoreless second quarter and a shooting percentage below twenty percent for the game.
“They shot the lights out, though, in the first quarter,” said Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy.
McCoy noted that she had her team employ a defensive press in the second quarter to get Toutle Lake out of their comfort zone and then shifted to a box-and-one scheme on the Ducks leading scorer, Molly Donald, after the intermission. Donald finished the game with 14 points while Jordyn Grabenhorst added seven points.
“I think we started out our first game a little nervous,” said McCoy. “The soccer girls are finally back. They’ve got their practices in but getting them to gel again will probably take a little bit. That started tonight.”
Callie Lawrence led all scorers with 17 points for Onalaska, while chipping in three assists and three steals. Alex Cleveland-Barrera added nine points in the win while Carmen Cleveland-Barrera scored four points and dished 7 assists. Eryn Duryea led Onalaska on the glass with six rebounds.
“I think we’re a deeper team than we have been the last couple of years,” added McCoy. “I think we used to be a pound the ball on the inside team in the past but I think we can get out and run the ball a little bit more this year and I’m excited to see that.”
Onalaska (1-0) will host Wahkiakum on Friday.
Vikings Swarm Morton-White Pass
MOSSYROCK — The Vikings defense was in mid-season form here on opening night as they defeated Morton-White Pass 54-7 in their inaugural non-league girls basketball contest on Wednesday.
Mossyrock allowed just one player to score all night and held the Timberwolves scoreless in both the second and fourth quarters. The hometown Vikings also won the rebound battle 37 to 19 while holding MWP to just six percent shooting from the field. Shaylee Peters scored all seven points for the T-Wolves.
“We came out really strong, being a big rivalry with Morton-White Pass just 10 minutes down the road. In our home opener I was really happy to see that defensive effort out of the gate. I loved the intensity,” said Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft.
Payton Torrey led all scorers with 11 points for the Vikings while Madison Vigre added 10 points. Faith Mulligan and Caelyn Marshall each scored eight points in the win. Mulligan added six rebounds while Hailey Brooks led the glass cleaning effort with 10 boards.
“Everybody played pretty well across the board. Scoring was spread out and rebounding was spread out for the most part,” said Moorcroft. “One game in we still have a lot to learn about our team but I saw some good things tonight. We were pushing the ball really well and I think we can play some pretty good defense as well.”
Mossyrock (1-0) will host Napavine on Friday. MWP (0-1) will host Castle Rock in Randle on Friday.
