Wednesday's 2B Girls Basketball: Adna Stutters Out of the Gate Against Chief Leschi

Adna suffered the first upset of the District 4 2B girls basketball tournament here at W.F. West on Wednesday as they dropped their opening game by a score of 44-37 to Chief Leschi.

“That’s the bracket buster I guess,” said Adna coach Chris Bannish.

The teams played to a 4-4 standstill in the first quarter before the Warriors lodged a 20-9 advantage in the second frame to put the Pirates in a hole they couldn’t find their way out of.

“Everything that could go wrong did go wrong and we never got any 50/50 balls,” explained Bannish. “We were just one and done and then they took the air out of the ball on the other end.”

In the third quarter Adna’s defense woke up and held Chief Leschi to just nine points. However, the Pirates were only able to muster five points themselves in that quarter. Facing a 13-point deficit with eight minutes remaining Adna went off for 19 points but came up short in their comeback bid.

“Five points in the third quarter is not going to cut it when you’re trying to make a comeback,” said Bannish. “Our pressure didn’t turn them over and then when it did we didn’t convert. We didn’t get anything easy. I bet we only had eight points in the paint all night.”

The teams both shot 14 of 49 from the field but Chief Leschi was able to make 13 of 23 free throws while Adna knocked down just 7 of 18 freebies.

Cynthis Laplante scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Warriors.

For Adna, Payton Aselton managed a double-double by scoring 12 points and snagging 12 rebounds. Faith Wellander and Kaylin Todd added seven points each. Karlee VonMoos and Makaela Meister scored five points apiece for the Pirates with VonMoos grabbing 10 rebounds.

“We drop into the tougher bracket so we’re playing the loser of the Toledo and Ilwaco game. We chatted about it and in a four team bracket we’ve just got to win a four team tournament,” noted Bannish. “We’ve got a tough row to hoe here but I think we can do it.”

Adna is scheduled to play again on Monday at a time and place that has yet to be determined.

Double-Doubles Lift Toledo Over Raymond

ROCHESTER — Kal Schaplow and Stacie Spahr each notched a double-double here Wednesday night as Toledo toppled Raymond 64-37 at the District 4 2B girls basketball tournament.

Schaplow, who was tabbed as a WIAA player of the week last week, tallied a game-high 25 points to go with 10 rebounds. Spahr scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds.

Toledo took a 13-8 lead in the first quarter and extended that advantage to 31-14 by the half.

Helping Toledo to the big win was their complete dominance on the glass where they snagged 45 rebounds compared to the Seagulls 19. In addition to Schaplow and Spahr’s impressive totals Kyleigh Holmes added eight rebounds to the team tally.

Toledo coach Brian Layton said his team utilized a slight height advantage and a collective nose for the ball in order to clean the glass so efficiently.

“We try to emphasize to keep them to one shot so it was probably a little bit of both. I thought we blocked out and we went out and got it. We didn’t wait for the ball. We went out and got the ball,” said Layton.

Toledo held Raymond below double digits in scoring for all but one quarter and the Seagulls managed just a 26 percent shooting percentage from the field.

“Gracie Madill played really good defense on Gardner and the other girls did a really good job helping her,” added Layton. “I thought Greenlee Clark and Emma Cline-Maier came off the bench and did a really good job.”

Kyra Gardner and Hannah Miller led Raymond with 12 points each.

Toledo will play Ilwaco on Saturday at either Montesano or Rochester in the quarterfinals.

Note: South Bend defeated Mossyrock 37-26 in Chehalis on Wednesday. The Vikings will play on Monday against a to be determined opponent in a loser out game.
