Tuesday's Prep Volleyball: Centralia Sweeps Adna

Posted

ADNA — Centralia wanted to bounce back after its Centerville Tournament performance. The Tigers certainly did that here on Tuesday night, defeating Adna 3-0 in nonleague volleyball action.

“Any time you can get out of Adna with a win, let alone a sweep, you’ve got to feel pretty good about it,” Centralia coach Neil Sharp said. “The team was really frustrated after Saturday’s tournament. They wanted to win that one and I think they turned that frustration into motivation and came out fired up and fixed a lot of those things we talked about.”

Centralia won the first set, 25-14 and earned the second set, 25-13. The Tigers faced some adversity in the third set with a deficit, but rallied to win 25-20 to sweep the match.

“We’re improving every game, that’s our goal. We don’t have a lot of actual varsity court time experience. We’re trying to fit the puzzle pieces into our team concept,” Adna coach Wendie Dotson said. “Every game we’re trying to improve on the previous game. I thought we did better in the third game. They are a really good program. We knew we would be challenged from the beginning.”

Centralia’s Rachel Wilkerson was 19 of 20 serving and had 17 assists and Chelsea Petrino led the team with four aces and 14 kills.

“One of the things we want our hitters to do is to be patient because the farther we get into league season, the more swings we’re going to have to take to win a point,” Sharp said. “Tonight, Petrino, Wilkerson and (Mckenna) Smith really led the attack for us and they’re all seniors, they’ve all been here a long time. They did a great job of finding holes. I’m happy for them.”

Centralia (1-0) is back on the court on Thursday, hosting Mossyrock in a nonleague match, while Adna (0-1) hits the road to face Toutle Lake on Thursday in a Central 2B League match.

Mossyrock Tops W.F. West

MOSSYROCK — Mossyrock opened up their season with a win here on Tuesday, sweeping W.F. West 3-0 in a nonleague volleyball match.

The Vikings took the first set 25-15, and earned the second set 25-17. W.F. West had their best set in the third set, but it wasn’t enough as Mossyrock closed the match with a 25-20 set win.

W.F. West’s Makenzie Moore had seven kills, Haley Simmons had eight assists and Ashlyn Whalen had 16 digs.

“I think the girls got to a slow start. That first set, they were getting a feel for the gym. The 2B small-town crowd brought a lot of energy in the gym,” W.F. West coach Emily Mora said. “It took a couple points to settle in, but we just caught on a little too late.”

Mossyrock’s Paige Moorcroft had nine kills and was 11 of 11 serving and teammate Ava Nelson had 23 assists, seven kills, four aces and was 13 of 14 serving. Jamie Carlson led the Vikings with 14 digs and Stephanie Fried added 10 digs.

Andee Nelson added five kills, Stephanie Fried had 10 digs, Faith Mulligan had nine digs and Lainee Gross added two aces and was 14 of 15 serving for Mossyrock.

“We came out with good energy. I think one of our weak areas was serve/receive, we’re looking to speed up tempo of game,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said. “Each night, if we move forward, I feel good about what we’re accomplishing.”

W.F. West (2-1) is back on the court on Saturday at the South Kitsap tournament, while Mossyrock (1-0) travels to face Centralia on Thursday in a nonleague match.

MWP Sweeps Tenino

RANDLE — The Timberwolves cut things a bit close in the third set, but still managed a 25-17, 25-17, 25-23 sweep of 1A Tenino here Tuesday night in nonleague volleyball action.

Belen Salguero led the way with seven kills, Delanie Hannah had six kills and served 9 of 9, and Hannah Smathers dished out 22 assists for Morton-White Pass.

Jacie Dunlap added five kills and earned the praise of MWP coach Tammy Kelly.

“She had a really solid all-around game tonight,” Kelly said. “And I liked that we spread our offense out pretty well tonight.”

Morton-White Pass (1-1) hosts Rainier on Thursday in Morton. Tenino (0-3) plays at Rochester on Thursday.

Tigers Get 3-1 Win Over Raymond

NAPAVINE — The Tigers lost a step in the third set, but still managed a 25-18, 25-12, 23-25, 25-17 win over Raymond here Tuesday night in nonleague volleyball action.

Mollie Olson piled up 18 kills and 19 digs while serving 15 of 15, and Melissa Lee had 13 kills and racked up nine block-kills.

Abbi Music added eight kills with 15 digs, Carleigh Oster tallied six kills and played well at the net, according to coach Monica Dailey.

Madelynn Thompson served 11 for 11 with eight digs and played well defensively, Dailey added.

The first two sets went well, Dailey said, with a good pace and good communication.

“That third game we were making some ball-handling errors — we got called five times on ball-handling, and then we missed four serves, so that’s nine points,” Dailey said. “You’ve got to take care of the ball, so that made the difference in our game, right there.

“But they really picked up the momentum and finished strong,” she added.

Napavine (2-0) plays in Yakima at the SunDome Volleyball Festival on Friday, starting with a 9 a.m. match against Darrington.
