Tuesday's Prep Girls Basketball Roundup: W.F. West Surges Past North Thurston

Posted

W.F. West held a two-point advantage going into the fourth quarter, but scored 29 points in the fourth to earn a 65-44 win over North Thurston in nonleague basketball in Chehalis on Tuesday.

“There comes a time when you play the way that we play, I don’t know if it’s halfway through the third or at the end of the third or the start of the fourth, the other team is going to get a little bit tired,” W.F. West coach Tom Kelly said. “We were hoping that would happen a little bit sooner but it didn’t. They were in good shape but I think that is what happened.”

The spark in the fourth quarter came from freshman Taya McCallum, who came in off the bench and hit some 3-pointers to help get the W.F. West offense going. From there, the Bearcats were getting steals and easy transition points.

Neither team could find offense in the first quarter, with the two teams tied at eight after the first quarter. W.F. West was able to get going in the second quarter and take a 23-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

North Thurston made a game out of it in the third quarter and cut the lead to 36-34 going into the fourth quarter. But the Bearcats offense came alive in the fourth to pull away and earn a big win.

W.F. West (5-0) has a week off before competing in the Great Wolf Lodge Tournament in Napavine next Tuesday, Dec. 27. The Bearcats face Kings at 6 p.m.

Kalama Stomps Toledo

TOLEDO — Kalama’s Kaelyn Shipley and Parker Esary combined for 51 points as the Chinooks earned an 88-51 win over Toledo here in Central 2B League basketball on Tuesday.

Shipley scored 31 points, while Esary ahd 20 points and teammate Serena Montanez added 17 points. Anna Tauscher led the Indians with 19 points and Kal Schaplow added 11 points.

Toledo kept it close after the first quarter, with Kalama leading 19-14. But the Chinooks scored 31 points in the second quarter while holding Toledo to nine points, taking a 50-23 lead at halftime, allowing Kalama to cruise in the second half.

“In the first quarter, we did a decent job. We wanted to keep the ball out of Shipley and Esary’s hands and make other kids beat us,” Toledo coach J.B. Ewers said. “We did that well in the first quarter, but in the second quarter when I put in some other kids, we had a hard time keeping up that strategy. Montenez started hitting some shots, we got into some foul trouble and kept putting them on the line. It was a rough second quarter.”

Toledo (2-5, 1-4) has some time off before participating in the Trap-It Holiday Tipoff at Central Washington University in Ellensburg next Thursday at 2 p.m. against Kittitas.

Cardinals Downed By Ducks

TOUTLE — Winlock couldn’t find their offense on Tuesday, falling to Toutle Lake 55-28 here in Central 2B League basketball.

Toutle Lake’s Britzy Hockett led all scorers with 15 points, and Ashlynn Dean added 11 points for the Ducks. Mika Hammond led Winlock with nine points.

Toutle Lake jumped out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter, and increased the lead to 31-11 at halftime. The Ducks kept swimming in the second half to earn the win.

Winlock was without Rianna Whitehead, who was nursing an ankle injury.

“We were without our leading scorer for a team that doesn’t score very well,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “She’s a ball handler, rebounder, not having her presence hurt us. We gave them anything they wanted in the key. You’re not going to win basketball games when you do that.”

Winlock (2-6, 0-5) hits the road to face Northwest Christian on Friday at 2 p.m. in Lacey.

Pirates Drop Trojans

PE ELL — Devanie Kleemeyer and Isabella Elwood each had 15 points for Adna as the Pirates cruised past Pe Ell 61-22 in Central 2B League basketball on Tuesday.

Kenya Lorton added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates and Lili Glover chipped in 10 points. Katie Davis led Pe Ell with eight points.

Adna jumped out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter, and increased the lead to 41-12 at halftime, allowing the Pirates to sail to the win in the second half.

“Adna is a very good ball club, very well coached. Their defensive pressure created a lot of problems for us, they play very fast,” Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps said. “Our girls played hard throughout the game, had a lot of heart, but when it comes down to stats, it speaks for itself.”

Adna (6-0, 4-0) travels to play Onalaska on Wednesday in a C2BL game while Pe Ell (1-6, 1-4) is back on the court at the Jack Q. Pearson Holiday Classic, hosted by Willapa Valley. The Trojans play on Tuesday, Dec. 27 against Willapa Valley at 4 p.m.

Tigers Slip Past Mountaineers

NAPAVINE — The Tigers were able to overcome a bout of the shooting woes here Tuesday night en route to a 36-26 Central 2B League victory over Rainier.

A solid defensive effort muted the impact of the Tigers cold touch as they held the Mountaineers to no more than five points per quarter through the first three periods.

Holding a 29-14 lead going into the final frame Napavine coach Jeremy Landram decided to let some of his inexperienced Tigers out for a romp on the court.

“It was a game that pretty much was good for the young group of kids that we have playing to get some experience,” said Landram, who complimented his team for weathering the storm and finding a way to gut out a win. “We just got in a little rhythm. We’re playing without some people so it just took us a little bit to get in a rhythm.’

Becca Snaza contributed nine points to the Tigers tally while undertaking point guard duties.

“Beccas did a really good job tonight handling the ball,” said Landram.

Melissa Lee led all players in scoring and posted a double-double plus with 23-points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots to boot.

“It’s great, but that’s just a consistent game for her,” said Landram of Lee, who’s averaging 23 points and 11 rebounds so far this season. “She’s doing a really good job. She’s a blessing. She’s fun to coach.”

Napavine (4-1) hosting Battle Ground at home on Thursday.

Hilanders Big Time Tigers

KELSO — A rough night shooting on the road doomed Centralia as they fell at the hands of the Hilanders here Tuesday night in a nonleague contest by a score of 43-27.

The Tigers kept things close through two quarters, and even held a six point lead early in the second period, but failure to capitalize on easy scoring opportunities kept the door open for Kelso and the Hilanders wound up barging right through.

Turns out those missed shots turned contagious for Centralia.

“It was almost like a lid on the other side of the basket,” said Centralia coach Doug Ashmore, whose team made just 18 of 60 shot attempts. “We had open looks they were just not falling.”

On the flip side, Kelso got hot on offense and managed to outscore the Tigers 23-10 in the second half.

Kelo was led in scoring by Alexandra Harman’s 12 points and Alexis Kleven added 10.

Despite the loss Ashmore was pleased with the fight his team showed on their second game in as many nights.

“I’m happy, you play back to back nights and you just dig your heels in and we did manage some good things on defense,” said Ashmore.

Centralia was paced by Ellie Corwin who posted double-double plus with 10 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots.

“I think there’s only one night where she hasn’t had a double-double,” said Ashmore, who noted that Corwin was forced to sit nearly a full quarter in the first half with foul trouble.

Centralia (4-2) will play at Olympic on Thursday.

Beavs Bash Warriors

ROCHESTER — Tenino continued on their torrid tear through their preseason schedule with a 52-27 victory over their South Thurston County rivals from Rochester here Tuesday night.

The Beavers took advantage of early Warrior miscues in order to stake out strong 18-2 lead in the first quarter.

“Basically the first quarter was a layin drill for them,” said Rochester coach A.J. Easley. “We can’t get outscored 18-2 in the first quarter and expect to win.”

Leading the way for Tenino was Kaylee Schow who netted a game high 27 points and Olivia Bailon added 10 points for the Beavers.

“We played really well, came out with lots of energy,” said first year Tenino coach Brandi Thomas. “That’s one thing we talked about is the second time around, playing teams twice, we knew they were going to come hungry like we were. It showed in that first quarter.”

Rochester managed to outpace Tenino 13-9 in the third quarter but by that point the deficit was already too great to overcome. Easley pointed out that his team also put in a fair effort cleaning the glass, as they gathered 27 team rebounds, including a team-high 9 boards from Paige Winter.

“We actually didn’t rebound that bad, mostly because most of their shots went in,” noted Easley. “We just gave up way too many shots within 10 and 5 feet that were pretty easy shots to put in, and they were up to the task.”

Rochester (1-5) will travel to Hudson’s Bay for a nonleague game on Wednesday and Tenino (7-1) will play at Seton Catholic in Vancouver on Thursday.

Loggers Chop Down Timberwolves

RANDLE — Morton-White Pass had 78 attempted field goals against Onalaska here on Tuesday night, but not enough found twine as the Loggers earned a 53-36 win in Central 2B League basketball.

Onalaska’a Kasey Hoyt led all scorers with 15 points, including draining 10 of 11 free throws attempted. Abigal Bogar added 13 points for the Loggers. Jacie Dunlap was the leading scorer for MWP with eight points.

MWP made 13 of 78 field goals and was 9 of 23 from the free throw line.

“We shot a ton of times but couldn’t shoot the ball at all, couldn’t hit anything,” MWP coach Tom Griffith said. “It’s a weird looking stat. I mean we shot the ball 78 times, they shot it 47, but our shooting percentage is just the way it’s been.”

The first half was closely contested, as Onalaska had a 9-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Timberwolves battled back for a 17-16 lead at halftime.

But the Loggers came out strong in the third quarter, taking a 47-24 lead going into the fourth quarter, allowing Onalaska to cruise to victory.

MWP (1-5, 0-4 league) will play in the Holiday Tournament at Rochester on Dec. 27-28, while Onalaska (3-2, 3-2) hosts Adna on Wednesday in a C2BL matchup.

Stubborn Mules Outlast Vikings

CATHLAMET — Wahkiakum had four players score in double digits here Tuesday night as the Mules defeated Mossyrock in a Central 2B League contest by a score of 55-45.

The Mules jumped out to a 17-11 first quarter lead and never lost a quarter as they fended off a persistent Viking counter attack all game long.

“We competed very well. I was very impressed with every kid that got in the game,” said Mossyrock coach Darin Bullock. “We moved the ball around pretty well today offensively.”

The Vikings actually managed to outshoot the Mules by the slimmest of margins (30 percent to 29 percent) but a barrage of long range bombs made the difference for Wahkiakum.

“They’ve got some shooters. They’ve got four kids in double digits tonight,’ said Bullock.

Peyton Souvenir lead the Mules with 17 points, while Savannah Burdick, Paige Mace and Macie Elliot added 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.

Bullock noted that those four Wahkiakum players alone hoisted a whopping 33 three-point shots.

“The vast majority of those shots were contested and they were not afraid to shoot,” noted Bullock. “Defensively they were making shots with hands in the face and they were shooting lights out there for a while.”

Mossyrock’s Lainee Grose lead all scorers with 20 points and Ava Nelson pitched in a tidy six point, six rebound effort.

Mossyrock (4-2, 2-2 league) will visit Kalama on Wednesday.
