MOSSYROCK — The hometown Vikings emerged with a 3-1 win over W.F. West here on Tuesday with set scores of 18-25, 25-8, 25-10 and 25-18 in a non-league volleyball tilt.

Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson noted that she was proud of the way her younger players found a way to contribute to the win.

“Things went wrong in the first set and they showed a lot of integrity to turn that around,” said Nelson. “Those are things you want your players to experience so they know how to turn that momentum around later on.”

Hailey Brooks was 23-of-24 from the service stripe with seven aces while Faith Mulligan was 20-of-21 on serves with seven digs and nine on-target passes.

“(Hailey) had the best serving night for us. It was impressive for a freshman,” said Nelson, noting that Brooks’ serving sparked a big run in the second set.

Morgan Houghtelling was perfect on 14 serves for the Vikings with four aces and 30 assists. Andee Nelson added 19 kills and Payton Torrey was 11-of-13 on serves.

For W.F. West, Payge Crawford had 14 digs, Sydney VonMoos turned in seven kills, and Paytton Crawford dished 17 assists.

“Volleyball is an emotional game, so I think it can be difficult to maintain that high level of energy into that second game. We just kind of lost our wind for a minute,” explained W.F. West coach Emily Mora. “Mossyrock is solid. They work hard and have some strong hitters. We just struggled to find the holes in their defense and capitalize on those.”

Mossyrock (1-0) will play at Onalaska on Thursday. W.F. West (0-3) will play at the Centerville Tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m. in Centralia.

Warriors Swing and Miss Against Montesano

ROCHESTER — The Bulldogs dispatched the Warriors in three sets here on Tuesday in a non-league volleyball matchup. Montesano was able to best Rochester 25-20, 25-17 and 25-12 in the sweep.

“We didn’t have a very good night at the net,” noted Rochester coach Wendy Hawes.

Emily Morris notched four aces and five kills for the Warriors while Kortney Kerbaugh added five kills playing from the middle and the right side. Bethany Hawes added 14 digs and 11 assists in the loss.

“This being our second game we’re still just working on trying to find a good rhythm and Montesano definitely made less errors than us,” added Hawes. “We’ve got to work on some continuity for our team. It’s a tough night for us but it’s still early.”

Rochester (1-1) will play at Eatonville on Thursday. The Warriors will play in the Centerville Tournament on Saturday in Centralia.

Centralia Can’t Get Off the Ground Against Cards

ORTING — The Tigers went down in three sets here against the Cardinals on Tuesday in non-league volleyball action. Orting dropped Centralia 27-25, 25-16, and 25-15 for the match win.

“Defensively they were very sound. They made good reads on the ball,” Centralia coach Marti Smith said of Orting. “ We had plenty of opportunities attacking on them we just couldn’t find a hole out there.”

Maddy Stoeckler was 13-for-13 on serves with 20 assists to lead the Tigers. Jadyn Hawley was 9-of-9 from the service stripe with eight digs for Centralia while Kennedy Strophy was 10-of-10 serving. Hailey Brann added six kills and two blocks in the loss while Kylie Sharp turned in 13 digs.

“We started out in the first set going up 19-13 and feeling really good and then all of a sudden it’s almost like we were a little fearful of success because of the kind of season we had last year,” said Smith. “We were running on all cylinders in that first set and playing exactly like I would have expected us to play for our first time out but then we started playing not to lose instead of playing with a killer instinct.”

Centralia (0-1) will host the Centerville Tournament on Saturday. Their first contest is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Acorns Avoid the Sweep at Chief Kitsap

Napavine Drops Raymond in Four

NAPAVINE — After a rough start, Napavine righted the ship after the first set and won the next three to earn a 3-1 win against Raymond in a non-league volleyball match here on Tuesday.

Raymond won the first set 25-15, but the Tigers responded and won the next three sets with scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-17.

Jordan Wilson served 100 percent and had 15 assists and Sydney Purvis also served 100 percent and added seven kills. Vannie Fagerness recorded 20 digs and Haily Murray chipped in 11 kills and 11 digs. Skyla Ettner added a great night at the net, hitting 100 percent with five kills.

“Defensively, we weren’t the team that we are tonight. That first set, we were down, came out of the gate 0-8,” Napavine coach Monica Dailey said. “We would do something good and we follow it up with a bad hit or a bad set or we get aced. We had a lot of trouble getting started in that first set. The second set, we came out real strong. We have a tendency to let up a little bit. That’s a little frustrating and something we’ll fix. I’m happy to get the win and we’re moving in a positive direction.”

Napavine (2-0) hosts Adna on Thursday in a non-league contest.
