Tuesday's Prep Volleyball: Onalaska Prevails Over Morton-White Pass in Four Sets

Posted

ONALASKA — It was a close match here on Tuesday, but the Lady Loggers were able to win 3-1 over Morton-White Pass in a non-league volleyball match.

“I think it was a great team effort by everybody. I had some girls come in and serve, everybody has their job and everybody knows what their job is,” Onalaska coach Terri Dalsted said. “We’re really clicking with that. As a team, we all did great.”

Onalaska lead for most of the first set, but MWP closed the gap and tied the game at 24 before Ony recorded the next two points for a 26-24 set win.

The second set was close as well but also went to Onalaska, 25-22. MWP trailed for most of the third set but made a late run and tied it at 23. The team’s went back and forth and the T-Wolves were able to earn a 30-28 win to force a fourth set.

MWP came back down 2-0 against Montesano on Monday, and Dalsted reminded her team to finish the T-Wolves before they were able to gain any more momentum.

“I knew they had it in them too because they fight and so I told the girls that in between games, you guys can’t let up right now because they’re a tough team and you have to persevere and they were able to do that in the fourth game,” Dalsted said.

The Lady Loggers were able to start strong and finish MWP in the fourth set, 25-18.

Eryn Duryea shined on Tuesday, serving 100 percent with 45 digs and 19 kills. Olivia Mitten served 92 percent and had 14 kills. Sophia Leal had 38 digs, Carmen Cleveland-Barrera had four blocks and Kaylyna Osborne served 92 percent for Onalaska.

Dalsted noted the team had the chance to play in the Yakima SunDome Classic last Friday and the team played well and was able to carry that play into tonight’s match.

“We had the opportunity to go over to Yakima and we’ve been playing with some different players the first few weeks. Tonight, we got to play with who we’ve played with all summer and we got to build on that over in Yakima and so it really came through,” Dalsted said. “We got to build some camaraderie and some momentum over there. To bring it back here and play in our league, we just went with it and the girls did great.”

MWP’s Taylor Nilius had 12 kills and Jacie Dunlap added 11 kills. Carly King tallied eight kills, 17 assists and nine aces.

T-Wolves coach Tammy Kelly wasn’t pleased with her team’s effort tonight.

“I don’t think we came ready to play to start with,” Kelly said. “They picked it up in game three and four but it just wasn’t quite enough. We’ve just got to come back out and practice tomorrow and come out strong against Mossyrock on Thursday with our first league game.”

Dalsted was happy with the performance of Dunlap and King and the ability the team showed in the third set to push through the mental block to win the set.

Onalaska (1-3) travels to Wahkiakum on Thursday for the first Central 2B League match of the season while MWP (3-1) hits the road to face Mossyrock in the first C2BL game of the season.

Toledo (2-2) is on the road against Rainier on Thursday in the first Central 2B League match of the season.

Tigers Take Mules Out to Pasture

NAPAVINE – The Tigers continued their early season success here Tuesday night by dispatching Wahkiakum 3-1 in non-league volleyball action.

Napavine won the first set 26-24, but dropped the second frame 20-25 as the Mules made a spirited run. The Tigers were able to regroup though and topped Wahkiakum 25-20 and 25-17 to seal a victory in their final game before Central 2B League play begins.

“Wahkiakum played well all night. They really pushed us,” said Napavine coach Monica Dailey. “We’d get way up and then let them back in. And then score a bunch, and then let them back in.”

Ada Williams turned in a perfect night at the service stripe for Napavine, including three aces and 12 assists. Ashley Dickinson was also perfect serving on the night with nine assists while Haily Murray turned in 12 kills and three block kills. Libero Olivia Alegria got in on 20 digs, while Vannie Fagerness and Sydney Purvis accumulated 13 digs, and 12 digs respectively.

Dailey said her players have been working hard to limit their own errors and putting an end to their opponent's rallies before momentum can swing out of their favor.

“The girls played hard. I thought we were a lot more aggressive tonight than we have been, especially in hitting,” said Dailey. “We’re still making a lot of third ball errors but I was proud of them because they didn’t let it get them down and they kept fighting.”

Napavine (4-0) will play at Winlock on Thursday.

Fighting Ducks Down Pirates

ADNA – Toutle Lake got the best of the Pirates in straight sets here Tuesday night as they defeated Adna 26-24, 25-11, 25-18 in 2B non-league volleyball play.

The Pirates managed to force the first set into extra points briefly but found themselves unable to keep pace with the Ducks the rest of the evening .

“We came out with good energy in that first game and I thought the girls played well,” said Adna coach Wendie Dotson. “I think they made some adjustments to our serving and they were quicker to make adjustments than we were so they kind of ran away with it.”

Dotson noted that freshman Alyssa Davis continued to play well after stepping into the lineup to fill in for an injured starter against Napavine last week. Anna Jones and Maddie Kleemeyer were two other players that earned a nod of approval from their coach for their effort in Tuesday’s loss.

“Anna did a really good job in the back row she dug quite a few balls and kept a lot of balls in play for us,” said Dotson, who noted that Kleemeyer spent time as setter in the game.“She did a really good job and got to our spots and got the ball up for our hitters.”

Dotson pointed out that the her team’s early season schedule was stacked with quality opponents. With league play beginning on Thursday she insisted that she expects her team to find their stride soon.

“We’re young and we’re inexperienced at spots, but we’re getting better,” said Dotson. “It’s a learning process and every step is an improvement.”

Adna (0-4) will host Kalama on Thursday.

Vikings Fall in Five at Kalama

KALAMA – After taking the first two sets here Tuesday night Mossyrock watched their lead slip away as the Chinooks came roaring back for a 3-2 victory in a non-league showdown of 2B volleyball titans.

The Vikings got up on Kalama early with a 26-24 victory in the first set and a 25-15 win in the second set before the home team awoke with a vengeance. The Chinooks took the next three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 15-12 in order to send the Vikings home with nothing to show for their efforts.

“Playing at Kalama and their crowd, they won the last three sets, so we struggled to match their intensity in the end,” said Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson. “We’re just looking for someone to step into that leadership role and kind of demand the ball.”

For the Vikings, Faith Mulligan was 26 for 27 at the service line with eight aces. She also posted 13 digs and six kills while Andee Nelson turned in 11 kills of her own. Heath Edgar was 16 of 18 serving with an ace and six kills, while Morgan Houghtelling notched six kills and Shania Hadaller compiled three aces.

Coach Nelson said she believes her team can, and probably should have, beat Kalama but the ball just didn’t bounce their way.

“We definitely expected them to be one of the top teams in the league this year,” said Nelson, who noted that her team had a few fits of miscommunication during their three set swoon. “We just struggled to pick up the hits and some of the junk balls.’

Mossyrock (2-2) will host Morton-White Pass on Thursday.
