LA CENTER — Tenino had five different players score goals to earn a 5-0 win over La Center in a non-league girls soccer match here on Tuesday.

The Beavers got on the board in the 9th minute on a goal from Courtney Dodge with an assist from Megan Letts. Rhian Mathis made it 2-0 in the 19th minute and Abby Severse scored in the 21st minute on an assist from Lara Kershaw. Kershaw scored a goal of her own in the 29th minute for a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Letts scored the only goal of the second half in the 50th minute.

Tenino coach Kevin Schultz was happy with his team’s performance and the variety of goal-scorers on Tuesday.

“I thought we played well. We moved the ball well like we wanted to. Early on in the game, they were panicky but once we settled in, we scored three goals in a 10 minute span,” Schultz said.

Tenino (5-0) travels to Rochester on Thursday for a non-league Scatter Creek Derby game.

Bearcats Salvage Tie at Elma

ELMA – W.F. West needed a goal in the final seconds of play here on Tuesday night in order to escape with a 3-3 tie in non-league play against the 1A Eagles.

Elma got on the board first with a goal in the 24th minute but the Bearcats evened things up at 1-1 in the 33rd minute when Abbey Duffey scored off of a rebound from a corner kick. W.F. West took the lead three minutes later when Lauren Tornow belted home a score off of a cross from Becca Deskins.

W.F. West took that 2-1 lead into halftime but managed to hold onto the advantage for just eight minutes in the second half before the Eagles again found the back of the net. Then, in the 79th minute Elma appeared to claim victory with a go-ahead goal as time drew short.

The long odds did not deter the Bearcats though and Duffey was able to earn a free kick during the 80th, and final, minute of play. Knowing that their opportunities to even the game up would soon run out Duffey promptly drilled a shot into the goal for her second score of the night.

“The girls knew the pressure was on and that was one of the things that I was proud of about the girls today,” said W.F. West coach Allen Anderson. “They just never stopped. They were hungry to get that last goal and get that tie. It felt really nice to see the girls have a good mentality and not give up at the end of the game.”

Anderson noted that goalkeeper Eryn Elder stopped five of eight Elma shots on the night, but he was perhaps most impressed by the play of a sophomore defender.

“Cassy Shilter played really well for us in the back,” said Anderson. “Elma has a really good attack. They’ve been averaging about four goals per game and she did a really good job for us running down a bunch of their through balls and really voiding their opportunities.”

W.F. West (1-3-1) will play at Capital on Saturday.
