W.F. West freshman midfielder Cameron Sheets made her presence known in her first career high school girls soccer game, scoring two goals to help the Bearcats earn a 4-0 win against Centralia in the annual Rotary Cup game in Chehalis on Tuesday.

Sheets scored the only goal of the first half in the 38th minute with an assist from Tizzie Zylstra for a 1-0 lead at intermission.

Sheets scored unassisted in the 49th minute to push the advantage to two goals. Zylstra scored in the 76th minute on an assist from Madi Mencke and Mencke found the back of the net in the 78th minute with an assist from Becca Deskins.

W.F. West goalkeeper Aeryn Elder made three saves in the clean sheet. Centralia goalkeeper Bailea Brown recorded 10 saves in the loss.

“I was really happy with the way our girls came out. They picked up right where they left off this summer playing good strong defense,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said. “That’s one of the things we really want to focus on. I was really proud of them for getting the shutout. Cameron, she’s the only freshman on the squad and a great addition for us in the center mid. She did a great job for her first high school competition of rising up to the challenge and showing her capabilities.”

Centralia coach Henry Gallanger noted his team didn’t have a bad game but needs to work on finding ways to score goals.

“We’ve got a young forward class. They’ve got to step in and do some things just like their young players stepped up tonight. Our young players have to step up,” Gallanger said. “We saw a lot of very good things in the second half. The transition back to defense when we lost the ball is where we’re getting caught out. Overall, we passed the ball really well but passing the ball really well is only one part of the game and we’ve got to figure out how to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Gallanger noted the stellar play of Brown in net to help keep the Tigers in the game. He also commended Rebekah Robbins, Carissa Kaut and Aaliyah Corona for their performance against the Bearcats.

Anderson is happy for his team and that the Rotary Cup will remain in the W.F. West trophy case for at least one more year.

“I’m really proud of the girls for the way they came out and happy for our seniors to get the cup in their last season,” Anderson said. “This game is always one we circle on the calendar, one we look forward to every year and I’m happy with the way they played tonight.”

W.F. West (1-0) travels to Longview on Thursday to take on R.A. Long in a non-league game. Centralia (0-1) hits the road to take on Hoquiam on Thursday.

Note: Rochester defeated Toledo 3-0 in a non-league match on Tuesday in Rochester.
