SOUTH BEND — South Bend was solid in the second and fourth quarters to put away Pe Ell 56-29 in a Pacific 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.
Rachel Ward led the Trojans with nine points and Charlie Carper tallied eight points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Jessica Sanchez led all scorers with 19 points. Karley Reidinger added 18 points and Hannah Byington chipped in 11 points for the Indians.
South Bend shot 47 percent from the field while Pe Ell shot just 22 percent.
Pe Ell took an 11-10 lead after one quarter, but South Bend dominated the second quarter to lead 29-19 at halftime.
South Bend outscored Pe Ell 18-5 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
“Defensively, we played really well. We had the lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter, South Bend did a good job of making some adjustments in that quarter and we got into a lull,” Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps said. “I’m very pleased with our effort. We have a lot of new pieces trying to get figured out. It will happen for us just not right now.”
Pe Ell (2-5) travels to North Beach on Thursday for a P2BL game.
Rainier Cruises Past Napavine
RAINIER — The Mountaineers scored 38 points in the first half to cruise to a 61-32 win over Napavine in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.
Sydney Purvis, Natalya Marcial and Vannie Fagerness each scored six points to lead the Tigers.
Kaeley Schultz led all scorers with 32 points and Brie Klein added 10 points for Rainier.
“They’ve probably got one of the best players in the league on their team and she’s only a freshman, which is really phenomanal,” said Napavine coach Shane Schutz about Schultz. “They really just scored at will and she did a lot of that for them.”
Rainier shot just 30 percent from the field, but Napavine wasn’t able to find their shot on Tuesday, shooting just 25 percent.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 17-9 lead after one quarter and built the lead to 38-14 at halftime. Rainier held Napavine to nine points in the final two quarter to preserve the win.
“I thought we improved today. I thought we ran some of our stuff a lot better today. It’s just such a big learning curve,” Schutz said. “I thought we had balanced scoring tonight and that’s what you want, not just one person who leads you.”
Napavine (2-7, 1-1 league) will host Life Christian on Wednesday and will travel to Raymond on Saturday.
