EATONVILLE — Rochester’s Lexi Jones-Sederberg recorded a triple double to lead the Warriors to a 73-60 win over Eatonville in a non-league girls basketball game here on Tuesday.
Jones-Sederberg scored 14 points, recorded 13 assists and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Paige Winter led the Warriors with 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Maddix Schneider added 13 points and Madison Bates was also in double figures with 11 points.
Jaelin Hotz recorded 23 points to lead Eatonville.
“I thought we played really well. For our first game, we got out and ran pretty well and to put up 73 points, it was a good outing,” Rochester coach Davina Serdahl said in her first game as head coach. “Lex did a great job getting the ball to (Paige). Four people in double figures helps the cause for sure, I’m pleased with how they played.”
Rochester led 6-5 after the first quarter, but each team scored 19 points in the second for a one point Warrior lead at halftime.
The Warriors created some distance in the third quarter, outscoring Eatonville 24-14 and closed the game out in the fourth quarter.
Rochester (1-0) hosts R.A. Long on Thursday in a non-league game.
Lady Cardinals Open Season With Win Over Castle Rock
WINLOCK — Madison Lofberg scored 11 points to lead Winlock to a 38-34 win over Castle Rock in a non-league girls basketball game here on Tuesday.
Addison Hall added nine points, Karlie Jones chipped in eight points and Jenna Jones recorded a team-high eight rebounds.
Winlock shot 31 percent from the field and all seven Cardinals scored in the game. The Cardinals scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
“I think we had a few first game jitters. Our fourth quarter was excellent. We made some big free throws,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson.
Winlock and Castle Rock played a close first half with the Rockets leading 16-14 at intermission.
After each team scored eight points in the third quarter, Lofberg scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth quarter and Hall made some key free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Winlock (1-0) hits the road to face Naselle on Thursday.
Toledo Takes Out Ocosta
WESTPORT — Toledo played their best basketball of the season in the fourth quarter here on Tuesday on their way to a 41-33 non-league road win against Ocosta.
That it was Toledo’s first game of the season meant that coach Brian Layton had to wait only three quarters before he saw the defensive and offensive goals of his team start to synch up and pay dividends.
The two teams played to a 18-18 tie at halftime and remained tied at 25-all after three quarters. In the final frame though Toledo was able to take care of the basketball while putting the cuffs on the Wildcats to double their output in the quarter and secure the opening night win.
Kal Schaplow paced Toledo with 22 points Kyleigh Holmes turned in an even eight point, eight rebound, six steal effort. Stacie Spahr came up with five points and five steals, while Gracie Madill scored two points and dished six assists.
Layton was impressed with the way Kyleigh Holmes consistently found herself in the right position at the right time.
“She’s a stat stuffer. She’s a really good defender. She brings a high energy to the court. She gets a lot of steals and gets a lot of rebounds and just plays really hard and we tend to follow suit as a team,” said Layton.
Layton added that it was a youth movement that helped to spark that fourth quarter rally.
“We had a lot of young girls step up. We’re pretty much a lot of sophomores and freshman,” said Layton touted the efforts of Marina Smith, Gracie Tauscher, Vanessa Rodrigues, Clark Greenlee and Spahr in particular.
“They really played well tonight and their defense was great,” noted Layton.
Toledo (1-0) will host Elma on Tuesday for a non-league game.
T-Wolves Corral Comets
MORTON — Morton-White Pass had only three players score here on Tuesday night but that was all they needed to eclipse Naselle 47-43 in their season-opening non-league girls basketball game.
Jacie Dunlap led all scorers with 35 points while thieving six of her team’s 17 total steals.
“It was pretty much a Jacie Dunlap show tonight. When she gets motivated and gets hot she can certainly score like that,” said MWP coach Tom Griffith.
Hannah Smathers just missed a double-double for the T-Wolves with a 10 point and nine rebound effort. Jaiden Linder scored the remaining two points on the board for MWP.
The T-Wolves tied with Naselle in the battle of the boars as each team pulled down 28 missed shots. However, Griffith noted that his team committed 26 turnovers which he deemed to be entirely “too many.”
After staking out a nine point lead during the third quarter the T-Wolves were dealt a temporary blow when Dunlap went to the locker room with a knee injury. Soon MWP found themselves trailing by one point before Dunlap returned in heroic fashion to secure the victory.
“She was attacking the rim well tonight and also shooting the threes well,” said Griffith of Dunlap.
Griffith acknowledged that since Naselle is not a league opponent they were likely caught off guard by Dunlap's scoring capabilities. He says it will likely get more difficult for her to carry the team single-handedly once the T-Wolves start facing more familiar foes.
“For opening night first night of the season I’m happy with it,” said Griffith, who noted that his team has been bitten by the injury bug from the get-go this season. “It was a pretty good start to get a win over Naselle with only eight girls healthy so I’m happy with that. But we’ve got to be better going forward because we won’t get away with some of this stuff in our league.”
MWP (1-0) will play at Castle Rock on Thursday.
