Tuesday's Girls Basketball: Bearcats Break Bad in Romp Over Rochester

ROCHESTER — W.F. West girls basketball has a reputation that precedes them.

That’s what happens when you win a lot of games by a lot of points. You tend to hurt a lot of feelings.

But fragile feelings are not a concern for the Bearcats as they embark on their journey through the 2A Evergreen Conference and work toward a probable return to the Yakima Sundome.

On Tuesday the Bearcats took another hard step in that direction as they downed Rochester 79-41 in EvCo play.

W.F. West roared out of the gate and outpaced Rochester 30-10 in the first quarter to set the tone for what lay ahead. What lay ahead was more of the same as the Bearcats focused on refining their high octane attack on both ends of the court.

Drea Brumfield posted a double-double by grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds while leading all scorers with 19 points for W.F. West. She scored the majority of those points on free throws and elegant lefty handed scoop shots from the block and posted 10 points in the Bearcats breakout opening quarter.

“We’re feeling pretty good. We went and watched Tumwater and Rochester play and they were ranked higher than us in the (RPI) so we really wanted to beat them right now,” said Brumfield.

The Bearcats continued to prove their point throughout the game as they chased the 40-point running clock mark. A three-point shot from Courtney Bennett with two minutes left in the third quarter gave W.F. West a 63-23 lead and let the clock continue to run unobstructed the rest of the way.

“We don’t really like to slow it down. We like to keep going. Not in a way to pound on them but that’s the way that we enjoy playing,” added Brumfield.

Bennett added 16 points for W.F. West and Annika Waring notched 11 points for the winners.

Holding a 38-point lead heading into the fourth quarter W.F. West coach sent his starters back out onto the court for a bit more run. Rather than looking to run up the score, though, Bearcats coach Tom Kelly says he was simply setting his star players up for some well deserved recognition.

“They started for one minute and I brought them back in so they could be acknowledged,” said Kelly.

The fiery Bearcats coach wasn’t finished looking out for his team though and emphasized that the Bearcats aren’t out to make friends on the hardwood.

“I could care less if people are upset or not. What does it matter? All last year they were upset and they are going to be upset this year,” added Kelly. “There’s a 40-point running clock rule. There’s rules for this stuff. I could care less.”

After getting knocked off their rocker to open the game Rochester managed to hang around in a14-10 second quarter and then equaled the Bearcats output in the fourth quarter with 14 points. But by that point their fate had already been sealed.

Rochester coach Davina Serdahl said that the Bearcats whirling dervish of a 1-2-2 press was the biggest obstacle to her team’s success. Indeed, the Warriors coughed the ball up 14 times in first quarter alone and 22 times before the half.

“We’ve just got to take care of the ball better,” lamented Rochester coach Davina Serdahl.

Lexi Jones-Sederberg scored a team-high 17 points for the Warriors and Paige Winter added 13 points, primarily in the second half. Winter also snagged a team-high eight rebounds.

Serhdahl said she was proud of the way her girls continued to play hard even as the Bearcats continued to pull away late.

“Even as much as we were down in the second half I feel like we picked up our offense, especially Paige, in the second half,” said Serdahl. “You’ve just got to keep competing. You can’t roll over. You've got to keep battling and never give up sort of attitude.”

W.F. West (7-4, 2-0 conference) will play at Tumwater on Thursday, while Rochester (7-5, 0-2 conference) will travel to Black Hills.

Cardinals Fly Past T-Wolves

WINLOCK — Addison Hall and Jenna Jones each recorded a double-double to lead Winlock to a 42-29 win over Morton-White Pass in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.

Addison Hall scored all 18 of her points in the first half and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jenna Jones added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Karlie Jones also grabbed 11 rebounds for the Cardinals.

Jacie Dunlap scored 14 points to lead MWP.

MWP led 13-12 after one quarter but Winlock regrouped and dominated the second quarter, outscoring MWP 17-4 to gain a 29-17 lead at halftime. Winlock won a low scoring second half 13-12 en route to the victory.

Winlock coach Tori Nelson applauded her team’s defensive play against Dunlap, only allowing her to score 14 points. She also noted the phenomenal performance of Jenna Jones in her first career double-double.

“I thought our defensive intensity was what did it in the first half, especially the second quarter,” Nelson said. “I was happy with our defensive effort.”

Winlock (3-9, 1-3) hosts Mossyrock on Thursday while MWP (1-12, 0-4) hosts Toutle Lake in Randle next Tuesday in a C2BL game.

Big Fourth Quarter Leads Toledo Past Kalama

KALAMA — Toledo outscored Kalama 19-2 in the fourth quarter to earn a 56-29 win in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.

Kyleigh Holmes filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Kal Schaplow led the Indians with 16 points and five rebounds and Stacie Spahr added 12 points and five rebounds.

Gracie Stemkoski led Kalama with 10 points.

Toledo led 26-14 at halftime but lost the third quarter. Toledo coach Brian Layton noted the spark Greenlee Clark and Marina Smith provided entering the fourth quarter to help the Indians dominate in the final frame.

“It helped us finish the game and really picked up the intensity,” Layton said. “We started to spread the scoring out, it’s good.”

Toledo (10-3, 3-0) travels to Onalaska on Thursday for a league contest.

Mossyrock Falls to Rainier

RAINIER — Mossyrock had the lead at halftime, but Rainier played a strong second half to earn a 57-44 win in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.

The Vikings led 20-16 at halftime, but Rainier scored 41 points in the second half to claim the victory.

Heather Edgar recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Andee Nelson added 12 points for the Vikings.

Kaeley Schultz led all scorers with 27 points and Faith Boesch chipped in 14 points for the Mountaineers.

Rainier shot 45 percent from the field while Mossyrock shot 34 percent.

“We played well in the first half and were super aggressive. We got into some early foul trouble and that hurt our momentum going into the third,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “We just had to work with different rotations with so much foul trouble. They have a couple really good shooters and we left them open for some threes. We just couldn’t chip back into it.”

Mossyrock (4-6, 2-2) travels to Winlock on Thursday for a league game.

Tumwater Drops Centralia

The Tigers battled back in the second half, but it was too late as Tumwater earned a 43-29 win in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls basketball game in Centralia on Tuesday.

Carissa Kaut scored eight points to go along with nine rebounds. Jayden Hawley added seven points and Danika Jensen chipped in nine rebounds.

Sophia Koelsch led all scorers with 11 points and Natalie Sumrok was also in double figures for Tumwater with 10.

Centralia struggled from the field, shooting 20 percent while Tumwater shot 39 percent. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 28-23 and shot a better percentage from the charity stripe.

The Thunderbirds wasted no time in taking a 14-6 lead after one quarter and expanding the lead to 24-11 at halftime. Tumwater won the second half by one point to retain the victory.

“I loved how our girls played defensively. We did not have a lot of opportunities shooting, but we were able to drive to the hole and got to the free throw line,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “Give credit to Tumwater, they played great defense.”

Centralia (2-10, 0-2) hosts Aberdeen on Thursday.

Tigers Fend Off Ducks

TOUTLE — Napavine only scored one point in the fourth quarter, but had built up enough of a lead in the first three quarter to earn a 49-40 win over Toutle Lake in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.

Sydney Purvis led the Tigers with 17 points. Rae Sisson and Natalya Marcial each scored nine points.

Casey Wentz led the Ducks with 17 points.

Toutle Lake led 19-10 after one quarter. Napavine dominated the second quarter, scoring 22 points to take a 32-21 lead at halftime.

The Tigers scored 16 points in the third quarter to lead 48-30 going into the final frame, with Napavine holding Toutle Lake to just 10 points to preserve the win.

Napavine coach Shane Schutz noted the performance of Purvis, sparking the Tigers to take an 11-point lead into halftime.

“The performance wasn’t pretty but we found a way to win,” Schutz said. “The girls played extremely hard tonight.”

Napavine (5-8, 2-1) travels to Kalama on Thursday for a C2BL game.
