Tuesday's Girls Basketball: Aselton’s Double-Double Paces Pirates Past Beavers

ADNA — The Pirates had all they could handle against Tenino here on Tuesday night and after a comeback by the Beavers, Adna scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to earn a 45-38 win in a non-league girls basketball game.

Payton Aselton recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Faith Wellander tallied 10 points and Makaela Meister grabbed eight rebounds.

“As you could see, it was pretty ratty. Good fourth quarter. I think I waited, coaching wise, a little longer to put the press on them,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “First half, I didn’t pressure them as much. Once we got in foul trouble, I didn’t want to give them freebies. I think our pressure and our depth wore them down in the end and it was that series of about three turnovers where we made shots and then the dagger in the corner was good.”

Bannish was pleased with his team’s effort down the stretch, even though it’s a spot they haven’t been in yet this season.

Ashley Schow led the Beavers with 16 points. Grace Vestal tallied eight points and Alivia Hunter chipped in seven points.

“We played well. They played hard. We played six girls and they got after it,” Tenino coach Scott Ashmore said. “Played great defense, just missed a few too many shots, played well.”

Ashmore was pleased with the scoring of Vestal and Hunter, stepping up to provide much needed scoring around Schow.

Stopping Schow was the priority for the Pirates and Bannish believes his team did a good job at containing the Beavers’ top player.

“We were in man, we knew Aselton could handle her. We didn’t think we had anyone else that could, strength wise, stay with her. I thought in the first quarter, did a great job,” Bannish said. “As we got in foul trouble, we had to go into our zone a little bit but I thought our middle girls at half, in the zone, they were trying to fight around the high side and they gave her two easy layups. We shouldn’t be fighting at the high side when the ball is in the wing, we should be low, just little adjustments at half that helped us in the end.”

Tenino shot 44 percent from the field while Adna shot 32 percent from the field. The Beavers struggled from the charity stripe, making just 5 of 13 shots. Adna won the rebounding battle, 32-24.

Adna jumped out to a 10-6 lead after one quarter and kept the momentum going to lead 23-15 at halftime. Tenino climbed out of the deficit in the third quarter, outscoring Tenino 14-6 to even the score at 29 heading into the final frame.

Adna was able to retake the lead in the fourth quarter and Summer White hit a 3-pointer in the corner with less than a minute remaining to secure the win.

Tenino has played just two games this season and Ashmore believes his team is still finding their rhythm.

“We’re still getting there. I think we’re getting better as we go,” Ashmore said. “We’ve had three weeks together and they’re figuring out what we want to do and so, they’re getting there, but they play hard. We don’t quit for four quarters. I think it’s going to pay off for us.”

On Adna’s side, Bannish was pleased with the way his team was able to knock down big shots in key moments, something the Pirates will have to do if they want to win games.

“I have good kids. I have kids that want to be here for 30 minutes after practice to shoot and we’re going to get better. If we can make some shots, we have those droughts, and if we can just make a few shots to keep them off Aselton, we’re going to be pretty good,” Bannish said. “Those other complementary players for us have to be able to make those open shots and I think as we go, the (Tyas) Pannette’s, (Ellie) Sliva, Summer (White), Kaylin (Todd), they have to make open shots.”

Adna (2-0) hosts Mount Vernon Christian on Saturday. Tenino (0-2) travels to Rochester on Thursday in a non-league Scatter Creek Showdown.

Toutle Lake Edges Winlock in Overtime

WINLOCK — Addison Hall recorded a monster double-double but it wasn’t enough as Toutle Lake won 55-53 in overtime in a non-league girls basketball game here on Tuesday.

Hall scored 37 points and grabbed 30 rebounds. Elizabeth Wolfe and Azhia Camps each added six points.

Jordyn Grabenhorst scored 17 points to lead the Ducks and Molly Donald chipped in 15 points.

Winlock shot 43 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle, 51-48.

The teams were knotted at 25 at halftime. Winlock gained a one-point lead after three quarters but the Ducks were able to tie the game and send it to overtime.

“I played five players. All five girls played 36 minutes, they played their guts out. We made a few mistakes and came up on the short end of the stick,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “They played hard, they never quit. We got them in foul trouble early in the first half and then they kept making runs on us, even when we had some of their better players out of the game. There was no quit, it was real back and forth.”

Nelson noted the 30 rebounds must be some kind of record for the girls basketball program.

Winlock (1-2) travels to Vancouver on Friday to face Seton Catholic in a non-league tilt.

Freebies Propel Rochester Past Bulldogs

ROCHESTER — Every coach who ever worked a whistle has extolled the importance of knocking down free throws. On Tuesday night that lesson was on full display as the Warriors edged Montesano 40-38 in non-league girls basketball action.

Rochester hit 15 of 22 free throws in the game for a clip of 68 percent, while Montesano was only able to hit 9 of 21 freebies in their two-point road loss.

McKynnlie Dalan led all scorers with 20 points for Montesano. Rochester trailed by seven points midway through the third quarter but a strong effort from Kourtney Kerbaugh helped the home team fend off the Bulldogs down the stretch.

“She really stepped up her game in the second half,” said Rochester coach Davina Serdahl, noting that Kerbaugh hit 10 of her 13 free throws in the contest on the way to a team-high 14 points. “She was getting offensive rebounds off of our misses as we kind of struggled from the outside.”

Rochester shot just 20 percent from the field, knocking down 10 of 49 shots.

Lexie Sederberg-Jones added six points and a game-high ten rebounds while Paige Winter added seven points and eight boards for the Warriors.

Serdahl added that she was most pleased with the balanced scoring effort from her team, which had six players score at least three points.

“I was really pleased with the bench and how they came in and gave us good minutes,” said Serdahl.

Rochester (2-1) will host Tenino on Thursday.

Toledo Tames Mustangs

TOLEDO — The home team used a big first half and a stingy defense to defeat Rainier Christian 67-9 here on Tuesday in a non-league girls basketball affair.

Toledo scored 47 points in the first two quarters while holding their foes to just five points. The second half wasn’t any more fun for the Mustangs, either, as they were held scoreless in the third quarter and scored just four points in the final frame.

Just one day after losing to Elma, Toledo coach Brian Layton was pleased with the way his team responded.

“They were ready to bounce back. Our starting five got us off to a great start and we just sort of rolled from there,” said Layton.

Kal Schaplow scored a game-high 14 points with four assists and three steals. Stacie Spahr added 10 points for Toledo and Emma Cline-Maier tossed in eight points. Greenlee Clark snagged a team-high six rebounds and five assists, with four steals for good measure. Vanesa Rodriguez added four assists and seven steals.

With a 42-point lead at the intermission Toledo rotated plenty of players onto the court in the second half. Ten players reached the scoring column in all.

“The younger girls all got a good amount of time tonight,” said Layton.

He noted that he was particularly pleased with the play of Taylor Langhaim who scored six points from the post.

Toledo (2-1) will play at Rainier on Friday.
