TENINO — The Warriors started the season off on a high note here on Tuesday, defeating Tenino 5-0 in a non-league boys soccer game.

Rochester senior Anthony Vasquez-Valentine started off the scoring with a goal in the 12th minute and then added another in the 26th minute. Enrique Sanchez scored in the 29th minute on an assist from Vasquez-Valentine. John Mejia scored for the Warriors late in the first half for a 4-0 lead at intermission.

The only goal of the second half was scored by Sanchez in the 56th minute.

“It was a really good game by our senior players and well rounded play by all of our players,” Rochester coach Matt Ashton said.

Tenino goalkeeper Devin Billings made 11 saves in the loss. Tenino coach Kevin Schultz was proud of Billings’ performance, as the lone senior volunteered to play goalkeeper.

“He’s never played in goal. We didn’t have a goalie, so he volunteered,” Schultz said. “In his first real true game, 11 saves, he had a good game in goal and he’s getting better everyday.”

Even in the loss, Schultz was pleased with his team’s effort.

“Our guys played hard, they definitely made some improvements,” Schultz said. “We let ourselves get stretched out. Other than that, I thought we played hard. We didn’t have a varsity last year so we only have two guys that have played high school soccer before.”

Rochester (1-0) hosts Montesano on Thursday in a non-league contest while Tenino (0-1) hosts Castle Rock on Friday in a non-league game.
