Tuesday's Boys Basketball: Winlock Gets Over On Loggers

ONALASKA — Winlock came out even or ahead in all four quarters here Tuesday as they slipped by the Loggers 50-45 in a Central 2B League boys basketball game.

“I think they outplayed us. We definitely got outcoached tonight and they were playing for a purpose and it didn’t look like we were. It was a disappointing home league game,” said Onalaska coach Wayne Nelson. “You’ve got to tip your hat to WInlock. They had a good plan and they followed through on it.”

The Cardinals were led by Bryce Cline’s 18 points. Coleson Richendollar and Noah Patching each added 11 points for the Winlock squad while Nathan Suhrbier chipped in eight points in the post.

“Their dribble penetration really gave us trouble,” noted Nelson.

Winlock managed to shoot nearly 50 percent on the night by hitting 22 of 45 shots from the field while the Loggers connected on just 39 percent of their 48 shots. The Cardinals also beat Onalaska on the glass 27-24.

Alex Frazier led the Loggers with a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double. He also had a team-high five assists. Former Cardinal, Carter Whitehead, scored 10 points, along with Cade Lawrence and Kayden Allison.

“We’ve just got to be better and it starts with better coaching,” said Nelson. “I think everybody can take a little bit of blame in this one.”

Onalaska (4-4, 0-2 league) will play in the Pe Ell tournament next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Pe Ell. Winlock (3-6, 1-1 league) will play at the Willapa Valley Christmas Tournament starting next Thursday.

Toledo Shoots Past Wahkiakum

CATHLAMET — Toledo scored 21 points in the first quarter to cruise to a 81-45 win over Wahkiakum in a Central 2B League boys basketball game here on Tuesday.

Andreas Malunat led all scorers with 26 points. Anthony Peak came off the bench and added nine points for the Indians, knocking down three 3-pointers.

Toledo knocked down 14 3-pointers against Wahkiakum and shot 49 percent from the field.

Logan LaBerge led the Mules with 10 points.

The Indians jumped out to a 21-5 lead after one quarter. Toledo and Wahkiakum each scored 12 points in the second quarter for a 33-17 lead at halftime.

It was all Toledo in the second half, outscoring Wahkiakum 48-28.

“The first quarter, we played well. We didn’t let them hang around,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “Down there, it’s a tough place to play. They don’t go away, they continued to fight. I feel like anybody off the bench would have made a 3. We had a high number of assists and were making the extra pass so somebody gets a wide open shot.”

Toledo (7-1, 2-0) travels to Ilwaco on Friday for a 6:15 p.m. game in a girls-boys doubleheader.

Kalama Prevails Over Morton-White Pass in Overtime

RANDLE — Kaleb Rashoff made a buzzer beater to send the game to overtime, but it was all Kalama in overtime to earn a 60-53 win over Morton-White Pass in a Central 2B League boys basketball game here on Tuesday.

Kaleb Rashoff led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Hayden Young chipped in 15 points and Dylan Richards added 11 points and nine rebounds for the T-Wolves.

Alex Dyer led Kalama with 16 points. Max Ross added 13 points and Montego Mercer contributed 11 points.

Down by two points with 3.8 seconds left, MWP called a timeout and drew up a play. Rashoff was able to get a shot from about six feet away and bury it to send the game to overtime.

“It rolled around the rim for what seemed like forever and dropped,” MWP coach Chad Cramer said.

MWP scored the first three points of overtime, but Kalama came back and took the lead and made free throws down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

“It was a back and forth game. If we played 10 times, we’d split the games five and five. We were very evenly matched but we came out on the short end,” Cramer said. “Our guys battled their butts off and really played hard. We shot the ball well but we came up a little bit short.”

MWP (6-2, 1-1) travels to Ellensburg to play at Central Washington University on Friday, Dec. 28, taking on Cle Elum at 5 p.m. and facing Woodland at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Pirates Overcome Slow Start to Mount Rainier

RAINIER — Adna needed a recalibration at halftime in order to find their way past the Mountaineers here on Tuesday. In the end, though, the Pirates were able to secure a 55-33 victory over Rainier in a Central 2B boys basketball tilt.

“We really struggled in the half court in the first half,” said Adna coach Luke Salme. “We moved the ball better in the second half and got it to the open guy so we scored at a higher efficiency.”

Indeed, Adna took just a seven point lead into the intermission but managed to outscore the Mountaineers 35-20 in the second half. For the game Adna was able to outshoot their foes from the field by hitting 46 percent of their 52 attempts while the Mountaineers dropped in just 11 of their 36 tries.

Lyle Metzenberg paced the Pirates with 17 points, while Cole Fay notched 10 points. Trevor Minkoff added nine points for Adna and Austen Apperson chipped in eight points.

Much of those scoring opportunities were sparked by a consistent defensive intensity.

“I’ve said it every game now but I loved the intensity at the defensive end. We forced a lot of turnovers,” said Salme.

Rainier was led in scoring by Ian Sprouffske’s 18 points.

“The Sprouffske kid is a little tiny freshman kid but he was impressive shooting it,” said Salme. “He’s just about 110 pounds and he launches bombs from deep. He’s going to be a good one.”

Adna (5-1, 2-0 league) will host Taholah on Friday at 5:45 p.m. as part of a boys/girls doubleheader.

Toutle Lake Too Much for Vikings

MOSSYROCK — The Vikings were holding their own here against Toutle Lake on Tuesday night until a hard foul sent them into a collective tizzy. From that point after the fracas early on in the second quarter the Ducks outscored Mossyrock 65-18 on their way to a 88-35 victory in Central 2B league boys basketball action.

“We’d been playing great. At that point we were actually down 23-17 and then they just ran away with it after that,” said Mossyrock coach Jordan Hunter. “There was a hard foul on the sideline and we reacted poorly and it got us off our rhythm.”

After scoring 15 points in the opening quarter Mossyrock couldn’t top 10 points in any other frame. Meanwhile, Toutle Lake scored more than 20 points in three quarters and never scored less than 18.

The Ducks were led by Logan Grabenhorst’s 19 points, while Mike Adams scored 14 points. Jackson Cox and Austin Sweet each added 13 points for Toutle Lake.

Hunter noted that his team needs to work on improving their shot selection in order to maximize their scoring opportunities.

“We took some shots that were essentially turnovers,” said Hunter.

Still, the Vikings came away from the 53-point loss enthused with the positive signs his team showed in the early going. Even if he was a bit disappointed in their lack of cool under fire.

“We worked really hard this week on basic fundamentals. Passing and catching. Jump stopping...And we were actually able to utilize those fundamentals against their press tonight,” said Hunter. “We’ll hold our heads high after this one knowing that we were able to hang with the team that’s probably the best team in our league.”

Mossyrock (0-7, 0-2 league) will host Castle Rock on Saturday at 7 p.m.
