W.F. West couldn’t get the bats going against Kelso on Tuesday, falling 4-0 in a nonleague softball game at Recreation Park in Chehalis.

Olivia Dean had a double and Paetynn Lopez, Ashlyn Whalen, Ashlee Vadala and McKenna Brinson all had hits for W.F. West.

The Bearcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, but couldn’t push any runners across.

“I’m proud of what we put out there. … Our bats are a little slow to get started but we’re not worried about what’s to come,” W.F. West coach Caty Lieseke said. “We weren’t quite stringing them together when we needed to. When we get down four at the end, we had chances to score but, strategically, you’ve got to make sure that fourth run gets across.”

Annika Waring got the start for the Bearcats, throwing six innings and giving up six hits and four runs while striking out five.

“I love what she put out there, coming off of basketball and being a couple weeks in with us,” Lieseke said. “She’s a fighter. She’s going to go out and put out the best thing she can everyday.”

The game was scoreless until the top of the third when Kelso scored on a ground-out for a 1-0 lead.

The Lassies expanded the lead in the fourth with two more runs, and a solo homerun in the sixth inning gave Kelso the 4-0 lead.

W.F. West had chances with runners on base, including loading the bases in the first and seventh innings, but were unable to capitalize.

Even with the loss, W.F. West was happy to play a game on their home field, whereas last season they didn’t get to play a home game until May.

“Two months earlier than last year, it’s great. We get to come back out tomorrow, it’s supposed to be sunny. Can’t ask for anything better in spring sports in Washington,” Lieseke said.

Hoquiam Edges Rochester

ROCHESTER — The Warriors were a run down with the bases loaded in the seventh inning, but were unable to tie the game as Hoquiam hung on for an 8-7 win in a nonleague softball game here on Tuesday.

Delaney Glazer was 2 for 3 at the plate and pitched 3 ⅔ innings and allowed one earned run while striking out four batters.

Lexi Trombley was 2 for 4 with two RBI’s in the seventh inning. Rochester coach Dave Montgomery noted she was proud of Trombley for playing well while sick.

“She told me didn’t even want to be there but she wanted to play in the game. She could barely talk,” Montgomery said. “She stuck it out, played the whole game. I really admire her fight today.”

Liz Ware had a double and two RBI’s in the fourth inning.

Hoquiam led 2-1 after one inning and 5-2 after three innings. The Grizzlies scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to counter the three runs in the fourth inning for Rochester and lead 8-5 after five innings.

Trombley’s two RBI’s in the seventh brought the Warriors within one run, but couldn’t get the tying run across the plate.

“The big thing we talked about after the game was cleaning up a few mistakes and making sure we’re having quality at bats. We had four strikeouts looking, that’s super uncharacteristic and something we’ll have to clean up,” Montgomery said. “Overall, I’m pretty happy with the fielding. I admire the girls fight for getting back into this game.”

Rochester (2-1) hosts Woodland on Thursday in a nonleague game.
