W.F. West’s Tanner Vaughn allowed one hit to help the Bearcats earn a 10-0 win in six innings against Woodland in a District 4 2A baseball tournament quarterfinal game at Bearcat Stadium in Chehalis on Tuesday.
Vaughn also allowed one walk while striking out four batters.
“He did a really nice job of using his offspeed pitch. He was really battling in some tough counts,” W.F. West coach Bryan Bullock said. “Guys were fouling balls off, he battled tough today and really competed out on the mound.”
At the plate, Lane Douglass was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and a RBI and Brock Jones was 2-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and two RBI.
Daniel Fagerness was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and a RBI and Max Taylor was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Brit Lusk added a double and two RBI for the Bearcats.
W.F. West poured it on early, scoring four runs in the first and three runs in the second inning to earn a 7-0 lead. The Bearcats plated one run in the third, fourth and sixth innings to clinch the win.
“I really liked our energy at the start of the game. I thought the kids were really eager to start a new season,” Bullock said. “Everyone is 0-0, I liked the hunger they had today.”
W.F. West advances to the semifinals to take on Ridgefield at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Wheeler Field in Centralia.
Columbia River Downs Centralia in District Opener
VANCOUVER — Columbia River scored early and never let up, defeating Centralia 8-1 in a District 4 2A baseball tournament quarterfinal game here on Tuesday.
Jeremy Wood started on the mound and was relieved by Jackson Hull in the fifth inning due to pain in Wood’s elbow. Joey Unger and Zack Rone pitched in the sixth inning.
Wood was 2-for-3 at the plate and Dominick Aguirre was also 2-for-3 for the Tigers.
The Chieftains scored two runs in the first inning. Centralia cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning, but Columbia River pulled away with two runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to complete the win.
“We were hanging right in there. We actually had a chance in the fourth to tie it, ball ticketed to right field but it hit our kid going from first to second,” Centralia coach Rex Ashmore said. “It for sure was going to get through and tie things up and who knows what happens. Our kids competed, they played hard. Columbia River is a quality team, they don’t make many mistakes and they took advantage of ours.”
Centralia will face R.A. Long at 6 p.m. at Bearcat Stadium on Wednesday in a loser out game.
Rochester Falls to Ridgefield
RIDGEFIELD — The Spudders collected 11 hits en route to a 7-3 win over Rochester in a District 4 2A baseball tournament quarterfinal game here on Tuesday.
Bodey Smith started on the mound and was relieved by Nolan Eyles in the sixth inning.
At the plate, Keegan Goldrick had two RBI and Landon Hawes had the other RBI for the Warriors.
Rochester scored first in the third inning with one run, but the Spudders answered immediately with two runs in the bottom of the third for a 2-1 lead. The Warriors regained the lead with two runs in the fourth inning, but Ridgefield came back once again and tallied five runs in the sixth to pull away for the win.
“Bodey did a great job, competed his tail off. He’s been battling a back issue but he still competed and ultimately kept us in the ball game,” Rochester coach Brad Quarnstrom said. “It was a very good baseball game, good clean game on both sides.”
Rochester faces Woodland at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Bearcat Stadium in Chehalis in a loser out game.
Castle Rock Ends Tenino’s Season
CASTLE ROCK — Tenino held the lead twice but couldn’t hang on as Castle Rock earned a 5-4 win in a District 4 1A baseball tournament consolation game here on Tuesday.
Blake Gubbe started on the mound and Ryan Deoskey came on in relief to finish the game.
“Both of them threw really well. Gubbe threw really well, got in a little trouble in the fifth, but he threw well enough to win a baseball game,” Tenino coach Ryan Schlesser said. “Gubbe looked good, Deoskey looked good, we just didn’t take advantage of their mistakes.”
At the plate, Dalton Chambers was 3-for-4 and Ryan Deoskey was 2-for-3. Karl Hisaw had a hit and two RBI and Gubbe was 2-for-4.
Tenino took an early lead with two runs in the second inning. Castle Rock gained the lead with three runs in the third inning. The Beavers reclaimed the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth, but the lead was short lived as the Rockets answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, which held up to end the Tenino’s season.
“We had guys in scoring position, couldn’t quite get it done which is a bummer in that loser out game,” Schlesser said. “It was tough losing to La Center the way we did, it’s tough to come back from that. We came out and looked good but couldn’t make the plays we needed to make.”
It was the final prep baseball game for Chambers, Deoskey, Hisaw, Gubbe, Alex Bratton and Jace Griffis.
“Brat was our guy on the bump all year. It really sucks when you can’t extend that season and get them a couple wins in districts,” Schlesser said. “We just couldn't get ‘er done. It’s tough for them, it was a good run. They did all they could do, just couldn't get the pieces to fit together.”
